The Create Unknown

The Create Unknown interviews the most successful online creators to reveal how they got started and how they keep going. iDubbbz. Vsauce. Casey Neistat. iJustine. PsychicPebbles. We talk to the YouTubers, artists, and streamers who exemplify our mantra of “Make Something. Mean Something.” Part high-level analysis, part hopelessly stupid, Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor from Vsauce2 dissect the complex business, the unpredictable drama, and the uncertain future of creating online. We’ll see you in The Create Unknown, Space Cowboys. In November of 2009, Art (aka TheGamerFromMars) uploaded his very first video, a scathing review of the Atari 2600 game “Aqua Adventures.” Now, thirteen years and 275 million views later, Art creates some of the most gripping documentarian-style content on the platform. His transformation, both in his content and his physique, is unlike anything else on YouTube today, and now he’s entering The Create Unknown to tell us all about it.

As the master of YouTube thumbnail clickbait, Art has crafted some truly titillating titles for his videos. So, naturally, we want to know what we would use to clickbait Art himself. We also dive into his storied history of shadowbans, and how hard the adpocalypse really hit him.

We dive a little deeper into that rabbit hole to find what kinds of things are causing demonetization to happen, and Art gives us some solid actionable advice to get around these issues. We also talk a little about twitter, and just how crucial it can be for creators to have a following on the platform.

Aside from being a successful creator, Art also runs “NanoZebra” – a company with the sole mission of getting sponsored messages for creators. He tells us about his inspiration for starting the company, some of his day to day operations, and if you can believe it, Matt connects it all to obscure WWII cargo cults.

Then we address the big one – Art’s gigantic muscles. He talks about his long journey toward changing his lifestyle, and how cyberbullying actually made him healthier. We also launch into a substantial Planet Fitness rant, and how the company actually LOSES money on Art.

We round things out with some discussion on Art’s incredible documentary series on TCU alumnus Chris Chan, the modern paradox of loneliness, and the allure of the dysfunctional.

Thank you to everyone who joined live this week, and thanks especially to our patrons. You make each and every episode of this show possible.

We’ll see you all next week for another Matt and Kevin solo episode!
