The Create Unknown

The Create Unknown interviews the most successful online creators to reveal how they got started and how they keep going. iDubbbz. Vsauce. Casey Neistat. iJustine. PsychicPebbles. We talk to the YouTubers, artists, and streamers who exemplify our mantra of “Make Something. Mean Something.” Part high-level analysis, part hopelessly stupid, Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor from Vsauce2 dissect the complex business, the unpredictable drama, and the uncertain future of creating online. We’ll see you in The Create Unknown, Space Cowboys. We talk a lot on this show about how important it is to GET HELP. Whether you’re working on a creative project, washing dishes at a restaurant, or moving stones and cutting brush in your backyard, someone lending a hand can be crucial. We don’t really talk about HOW to get that help though, so this week we decided to devote an entire episode to just that.

Matt kicks off the episode by telling us about the Franklin Effect, and how asking people for help can actually make them like you more. It can be easy to think that you’re bothering someone by asking for their time, but the reality of the situation might just surprise you.

Yes, it’s important to ask people for help. But it’s just as important to ask people for help the right way. We talk about the best way to go about reaching out to someone, and how best to value your time as well as theirs.

This isn’t a foolproof system, though, and sometimes you just reach out to the wrong person. Kevin tells us a story of one of the few YouTubers on his very short list of creators he dislikes. Matt highlights the importance of dealing with rejection, and we connect it all to everyone’s favorite softcore adult film actor turned boxing movie legend, Sylvester Stallone.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in live this week, and especially to our patrons who make this show happen each and every week. We’ve been really enjoying these guestless episodes, and we couldn’t do it without your support.

We’ll see you all next week for another episode with Oki’s Weird Stories!
