Sir John Hurt on cancer treatment; 1950s Soho and radio play

'Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell' is coming to Radio 4, with Sir John Hurt playing his old friend 'Jeff' Bernard. Sir John took James Naughtie on a stroll around old Soho of the 1950s, where life was populated by colourful characters: "Don't imagine it, simply because of the stories you hear, as some sort of crazy dissipation. There was a bit, sure. We knew how to get drunk. But at the same time the intellectual vigour was extraordinary. Feverish conversation," he said. On being offered the role in the original West End production, he said, "I sweated at the idea of playing Jeff and I passed on it in the end." Sir John also said treatment for cancer is going "incredibly well" and assured people not to worry. Hear John Hurt in Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell on BBC Radio 4 on Saturday 15 at 14.30 or listen again on BBCiPlayer.
