New Painkiller Guidelines to Reduce Addiction Risk
In response to a significant increase in opioid overdose deaths, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new guidelines which recommend that doctors try pain relievers like ibuprofen before prescribing highly addictive medications.
Sabrina Tavernise, science correspondent for The New York Times covering issues related to public health, discusses whether doctors welcome the new guidelines and looks at another measure aimed to curb drug abuse and fraud: e-prescription. NY state is requiring doctors do away with pen-and-pad prescriptions by March 27th.
