Insatiable Banter Machine

Two friends. One machine. We recommend movies, t.v shows, games and graphic novels to each other, which we go away and research for about a month. We then try and combine our experiences and analyse a question based around the topic.

Episode 9 - XCOM 2: How to Handle the Unknown?

Unlike other IBM episodes the machine are splitting this month’s topic into two parts. The reason being, that although XCOM 2 is indeed a great game, it has surprises, and multiple twists. So before we fully complete the game and look back on the journey we wanted to make sure we took time to catalogue our thoughts, and the progression getting to the endgame.

XCOM is a series of games whereby humanity faces an alien invasion of Earth, in fact the name XCOM means eXtraterrestial COMbat unit, and you and your squad must face a relentless tide. At first the very nature of the attack is unknown and much the game and its story is slowly fed to you. The question is; how much of the game is the threat of tackling something you’re not prepared for? The game does offer an ‘Ironman’ mode, which is like a hard-core; only one save, no going back, mode, does this enhance that feeling? Or can the fear of alien contact be scrubbed by constant replays? Once something is revealed, known, does it loose its immediate potency?
