Brazilian Prime Minister's Ties to Violent Paramilitary Gangs

Ahead of President Trump's meeting with Brazil’s Prime Minister Jair Bolsonaro, Glenn Greenwald, co-founding editor of The Intercept, former constitutional law and civil rights litigator and author of No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State (Picador, 2015), examines the ties between Bolsonaro and Brazil’s violent paramilitary gangs.

Brazilian's PM "Bolsonaro has modeled himself rhetorically and politically after Trump, although there are some really fundamental differences that makes Bolsonaro much, much more dangerous than Trump," says @ggreenwald.

"Bolsonaro comes from this era of right wing fanaticism that is steeped in the Cold War, he was part of the military regime that ruled Brazil and the CIA… propped up that military regime," says @ggreenwald on why Brazil's PM wants to align with the Unites States again.

"The most menacing crime comes from paramilitary gangs and militias, composed from current and former police and military." 2/2 https://t.co/1naV50wfU7

"The Bolsonaro government is trying to use this trip to reestablish his reputation as a respected, strong leader because Trump is meeting him. I want the press to understand how much trouble he is in and the person he is, not fall prey to the propaganda," says @ggreenwald.
