We're making part 5 of our 2017 series, The Lionel of Flanders, available for free in the build up to the Tour of Flanders. You can get the full series by becoming a Friend of the Podcast on our website.
The fifth and final part of the series takes Lionel to Ghent-Wevelgem and a trip to the cobbled Kemmelberg climb which has long been a key feature of the race as well as the Plugstreets farm track sections added to the race this year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War.
Ghent-Wevelgem has adopted a subtitle, In Flanders Fields, as the race seeks to reflect the fact the course passes through some of the battlegrounds.
The day before the race, Lionel and Simon rode some of the sections to get a feel for them and on race day they head back to see how the pro riders coped. The answer was, without much difficulty.
Also in this episode, Paul Shaftoe, a keen student of First World War history, explains the significance of the surrounding landscape and Luke Rowe of Team Sky talks about the challenges that face the riders in the race.
