1155 Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 - Classical Essentials 4

In this month’s edition of Classical Essentials we bring to you Beethoven’s Symphony No 3 in E-flat Major, also known as the Eroica symphony.

The back story for this symphony is as famous as the symphony itself.  Beethoven was a great admirer of Napoleon Bonaparte as he believed that Napoleon would stand up for the common people.  As with all tyrants, Napoleon’s support of the common people was only a front to disguise his real intentions - to be a dictator.  We know this all too well, even in today’s world.

Once Napoleon declared himself to be the Emporer of France, then Beethoven quickly changed his mind about Napoleon.  Beethoven tore up the 1st page of the symphony, with the dedication to Napoleon.  Later, of course, the 1st page was re-written along with the title change to “Eroica” or the “Heroic Symphony.”

Indeed, this new title more fully describes this masterwork of Beethoven.  Breaking free from the restrictions of the previous Classical period, Beethoven ushers in the early romantic period of music.  This symphony breaks new ground and ushers in a period which would bring the world such greats as Brahms, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and many others.  Also Beethoven would continue breaking new ground in symphonic writing with his later 6 symphonies which we will explore in later editions of Classical Essentials.
