episode 27: Targeted advertising & human rights: Are the two compatible?


Are internet business models fueled by targeted advertising compatible with democracy and human rights? This dialog brings together experts on the internet, human rights and society to brainstorm with the re:publica community how we all -- as citizens and as internet users -- can hold companies accountable for their business models.

Many internet platforms and services help us keep in touch with loved ones, engage in activism, and enjoy an endless supply of cat videos - often at little or no cost. In return, they show us ads. But what is the social cost? Society is waking up to how corporate surveillance that is used for targeted advertising threatens democracy and human rights by enabling media manipulation and potential misuse of personal data. Companies can make money by collecting data about us and selling access to our attention through targeted advertising, allowing brands, politicians, and others to use the power of data to influence people’s behavior. But is this compatible with democracy and human rights? Researchers from Ranking Digital Rights (RDR) will share what they’ve learned about  human rights harms that are caused or exacerbated by targeted advertising, and lead a conversation about how we all -- as citizens and as internet users -- can hold companies accountable for their business models.

RDR (rankingdigitalrights.org) is a nonprofit research initiative that works to create standards and incentives for tech companies to respect and protect the human rights of internet users. The RDR Corporate Accountability Index (see rankingdigitalrights.org/index2018) evaluates the world’s most powerful internet, mobile, and telecommunications companies on their policies affecting freedom of expression and privacy. We are currently developing new indicators to hold companies accountable for the human rights harms associated with the targeted advertising business model. In this discussion, RDR Senior Research Analyst Nathalie Maréchal will present RDR's new research and plans for evaluating companies’ disclosures and practices in relation to targeted advertising. Feedback from re:publica attendees will be critical to ensuring that we hold companies to a high standard of transparency and accountability.
