Mucho Soul Tape Special: Gilles Peterson and Paul Murphy Horizon FM 1985

To coincide with the appearance of legendary Jazz Room DJ Paul Murphy at our June edition of The Soul On The Canal Side session, we've dug out and digitised a rare and vintage Pirate Radio Broadcast from the 1980's. It was 1985 and Paul Murphy had recently vacated his notorious sessions at the Electric Ballroom in Camden and had moved on to pastures anew at The Sol y Sombra and The Wag. Taking his place at the Ballroom was a certain up and coming young lad who'd been slowly making a name for himself in the wine bars and pubs of South London and the Suburbs. His name was Gilles Peterson and he'd also secured a Jazz show slot on the Soul and Jazz-Funk Pirate station Horizon FM. This broadcast was recorded on one side of a 90 minute TDK tape in 1985 when Gilles had asked Paul in as a special guest. Paul was his typical dry humoured self while Gilles was a very young, wet behind the ears, enthusiastic budding young radio jock. It's a facinating and nostalgic 45 minute snapshot as Gilles and Paul discuss the music of the time including Paul's work as a label boss at Paladin, his love of Blue Note and Prestige releases and his initial reluctance to work as a DJ, plus much much more. the music is obviously great too! An essential listen for Gilles and Paul fans and those with an interest in the history of the Jazz dance scene of London. Enjoy!

Mucho love, respect and thanks Gilles and Paul
