While my oldest friend was shaken with the death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain in 1994, it wasn't until 1997 when I was shaken similarly, by the death of INXS frontman Michael Hutchence. The music of INXS had been part of my life since the late 80s, and had personal significance to me in a lot of ways.
When I decided I was going to do Remembering shows in the vein of our RIP shows, I knew I was going to get to Hutchence eventually. So today, I take 2 1/2 hours to walk you through one of the best lead singers in rock to die far too early, at the age of 37.
I feel like the music of INXS has sort of disappeared since he died, which is a damn shame. Lots of people seem like they've never heard of them, or they'll hear one of the band's singles and go "oh, is that who that is?" That breaks my heart.
So let's cover Michael's entire career, including detours, and talk a bit about how it all ended.
If you want a regular show, come back next week. The rest of you, strap in. It's an emotional one for me.
