This crisis is threatening the previously unchallenged authority of President Xi Jinping. It could reshape domestic policy imperatives and embed techno-authoritarian tendencies at local levels. It also has ramifications far beyond China's borders, potentially accelerating Beijing's economic decoupling with the outside world.
