What Does It Mean to Honor Father and Mother?
The 5th Commandment tells us to honor our father and mother, but what does this mean? Some parents misuse this Bible verse to maintain control over their adult children, holding them emotionally hostage by their approval or disapproval. One thing that encourages this distortion is that we project an idealized vision of the nuclear family onto scripture. But the idea that a family is limited to a husband, a wife, and their children would have been foreign to the biblical authors.
