Superfandom, Content Distribution, and the Future of Kids Entertainment -- Patrick Reese (General Manager of CoComelon, Moonbug Entertainment)

Patrick Reese is the General Manager of CoComelon, which creates 3D animation content for children. CoComelon is the world’s second most-viewed and third most-subscribed YouTube channel in the world and was acquired by Moonbug Entertainment earlier this year. Patrick started his career in independent film and worked as a Hollywood assistant to Lia Buman and later Peter Chernin. Prior to CoComelon, Patrick worked in strategy and business development at Fullscreen.

Patrick and I cover a lot of ground in this episode, starting with the power of niche content and superfandom exemplified by the Chernin Group’s portfolio companies like Rooster Teeth, Crunchyroll, and Barstool Sports. Patrick also shares his experience building distribution strategies for content partners, often extending audience and monetization beyond YouTube to platforms like Facebook and Twitter. CoComelon, for example, rose to success on YouTube by consistently releasing a single premium 3D animation video per week, which was contrary to most competing channels that focused more on quantity than quality at the time. But Cocomelon’s commitment to quality served it well long term, catapulting it to success not just on YouTube but also making it a top performing property on Netflix and best-selling kids toy brand. Finally, we touch on a number of recent news items, including the DOJ’s anti-trust suit against Google, Snap’s $50B valuation, and the downfall of Quibi.
