episode 4: A Desi Woman with Soniya Gokhale: Genocide & Humanitarian Crisis of Uyghurs in China--A Conversation with Louisa Greve, Director of Global Advocacy at UHRP--Part 2

Louisa Greve of the Uyghur Human Rights Projects joins us to discuss the horrific plight of the Uyghurs & explains how Americans & global citizens from every country can take action. The Chinese government has corralled more than 1 million Uyghur people into internment camps, where they have been subjected to political indoctrination, forced sterilization, and torture. Beijing frames these moves as its way of rooting out terrorism, separatism, and religious extremism. But the aim of China’s actions in Xinjiang is clear: to homogenize Uyghurs into the country’s Han Chinese majority, even if that means erasing their cultural and religious identity for good. What is taking place is a cultural genocide. This is the second of a two series episode done in honor of the prolific civil rights leader, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who aptly stated, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” Louisa Greve is the director of Global Advocacy for the Uyghur Human Rights project. Previously, Ms. Greve was vice-president for programs and East Asia director at the National Endowment for Democracy, with past experience at Special Olympics International, the corporation for national and community service, and the United Nations Development Program. She is an experienced nonprofit advisor and an expert on human rights in China, having traveled and worked in China since 1980. Her first visit to East Turkestan was in 1988. She currently serves as Washington fellow for CSW, an advocacy group promoting freedom of religion or belief for all peoples and faiths. Ms. Greve has served on the Amnesty International USA Board of Directors, the Virginia advisory committee of the US Commission on Civil Rights, the international advisory committee of the coalition to end transplant abuse in China, and the Liberty's Promise board of directors. She is the author of several book chapters on ethnic issues and human rights in China, and has testified before Congress on democracy in Asia.
