episode 153: Explore | Episode 3 | End-To-End

November 30 | Episode 3

Earlier this year, long-distance time triallist Michael Broadwith – a multiple national 24-hour champion – set about tackling Gethin Butler’s 17-year-old record for riding from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

This is arguably the most prestigious of the place-to-place records, with a history stretching back to 1886.

In this episode of Explore by The Cycling Podcast, we meet Broadwith and learn how he planned an executed his record-breaking ride – and how the man whose record he broke was out on the roadside in the middle of the night to support him.

Broadwith talks about the preparation and the pain, the support of his wife, Helen, who kept him going when he wanted to stop after hours riding in heavy rain, and the elation of realising the record was in touching distance. This is the story of riding from one end of the country to the other quicker than anyone has ever done it before and, in the process, perhaps revitalising one of the great cycling records.

In the second part, we hear from Chloe Hosking, the World Tour professional and Commonwealth Games road race champion, about her experience riding a Gran Fondo in Italy. Are these mass participation events really races in disguise?

Explore by The Cycling Podcast is hosted by Lionel Birnie, Hannah Troop and Tom Whalley and is supported by Rapha, Science In Sport and The Economist.
