episode 4: How To Grow A Beard - A Chin Full of Win [transcript]

If there was one specialist subject for Trev and you all had to guess what it is.......??????? Yes, this episode is all about beards. Wayne & Trev discuss why beards are still so fashionably trendy and why men grow epic beards to this day.

Trev gives his tips on growing a great beard and what products you should be using to procure one and as always they will (with obvious bias) decide as to whether having a beard is cool or not, what do you think??

Bullet points of key topics & time stamps:
Trev: 9:46

I had the goatee then obviously that got a bit and then the chin strap come in. I sported the chinstrap for ages bit of a noel edmunds going on.

Trev: 14:18

I think so. I think you've got our have your I think the misconception is big burly men should have a big beard. I don't really buy into that is very manly. And if you've got tattoos, there's a certain image that goes with it.

Trev: 26:33

Yeah, barbers do. But there are specialists guys that do beards and stuff. I wouldn't, I wouldn't trust I just an actual barber. There's no done beards before. But it's too tempting to do yourself. And I'll admit, I do cut some of the little curly bits. Because for such a straight haired guy, I've got quite a curly beard.

00:03  intro
You're listening to a Mid
00:03
life less ordinary, the weekly
00:07
podcast giving you the lowdown
00:07
on becoming a cool older dude.
00:13
The good times are not a faded
00:13
memory. It's time to start
00:17
living them again. And here are
00:17
your hosts, Wayne and Trev.
00:23
Yeah, Hello
00:24  Wayne
everyone, and welcome to
00:24
this episode called a chin full
00:29
of win, which is I'll let Trev
00:29
introduce himself and explain
00:35
what that means.
00:36  Trev
Right. Hello, everybody.
00:36
Welcome again. a chin full of
00:40
win that is about growing a
00:40
glorious beard. A nice big as
00:46
Jim broadbent says in hot fuzz a
00:46
big bushy beard.
00:52
And that's what we're going to
00:52
be talking about to die not not
00:55
one specific one, but about Jim
00:55
Broadbent. Not just Jim
01:00
Broadbents beard. I mean, that
01:00
could be an episode, but we're
01:04
talking about grooming male
01:04
grooming. He got a beard and now
01:07
I think he just described
01:07
someone
01:13
if you've got something that
01:13
stands out like a big beard, I
01:17
get that work. People are sort
01:17
of a guy with a big beard. Yes.
01:21
can't escape stuff. Yeah, this
01:21
is true. Yeah. Because it could
01:25
it stands out.
01:26  Wayne
Even though it's the
01:26
disguise of sorts.
01:32  Unknown
And everything. Yeah,
01:32
you can't get away. You can't
01:35
kind of say Oh, no
01:36  Wayne
man with a beard. Yeah,
01:37  Trev
yeah, no, no, the guy what
01:37
we've got a baby's only got a
01:39
little goatee. So it's not like
01:39
a psycho. You would be the one
01:42
they're talking about. Yeah,
01:42
exactly. So if anybody's
01:46
anybody's got anything against
01:46
me, like it as the guy with a
01:52
big beard.
01:55  Wayne
So this is Trevor
01:55
specialist subject. And really,
01:59
what we talk about first is a
01:59
little bit of a history of
02:01
beards. Not not just Trevs
02:01
beard, but basically, I mean, my
02:05
knowledge of it is that cavemen
02:05
grew beards to keep warm I would
02:08
say Trev would you say that?
02:08
Yeah.
02:10  Trev
Because they are. They are
02:10
good for keeping warm. Yeah,
02:14  Wayne
you get good value out of
02:14
that dude. Yeah, I don't mean
02:17
literally like you can't damage
02:17
pounds. You're saving energy
02:20
gold.
02:22
Yeah, I still wear scarves and
02:22
stuff. They're a bit more
02:22  Trev
Yeah.
02:27
awkward. Because obviously
02:27
you've got to tuck it all
02:30
because mine is long enough to
02:30
fit in a scarf. But yeah, that
02:34
there is a measure of how long
02:34
my beard was getting that you'd
02:37
put clothes on a T shirt and
02:37
stuff you'd have to like um,
02:41
pull out your beard at the
02:41
neckline Yeah, that you know
02:45
that that was like oh christ is
02:45
not that long. Yeah, history of
02:50
beards. Yeah, they must they
02:50
must have been obviously I
02:53
didn't have thought the
02:53
technology of raised in warriors
02:56
used to grow beards to look more
02:56
manly basically. Thought so.
02:59
Yeah, that sounds about right as
02:59
well. It just looks Yeah, manly
03:03
defined as we spoke on the last
03:03
episode that you know, sort of
03:07
intelligent, you know, you'd get
03:07
with a local lawyer and as a
03:10
main, you know, as a beard kind
03:10
of virility. Yes. Yeah, that's
03:14
funny. Another weird thing is I
03:14
don't believe in any of this
03:17
horoscope stuff. But I actually
03:17
am a Leo and really kind of does
03:24
sum me up with the amount of
03:24
hair I had when I was younger.
03:28
And now with the beard, so there
03:28
is
03:30  Wayne
you know, a poster or a
03:30
Russell Grant on your wall No.
03:36
Fridays but
03:39  Trev
Butlins Ponting
03:42  Wayne
He has been a bit quiet.
03:42
So yeah, it beards have been
03:46
worn by men for generations, for
03:46
different reasons, or various to
03:51
be manly to scare the opposing
03:51
enemy. Or in Egypt, I believe it
03:57
was a sign of wealth at one
03:57
time. And spartans
04:04  Trev
that's a style of beard,
04:04
isn't it? Yes. Yeah. It was very
04:07
Angular. very tall.
04:08  Wayne
Trying I didn't make any
04:08
times it's been used to show
04:11
wisdom, isn't it?
04:12  Trev
Yes. Intelligence. Yeah,
04:12
exactly. Lots of Moses.
04:16
Aristotle one. Yes. Oh, yeah.
04:16
Yeah, yeah, you're right with
04:19
the old. What do they call them
04:19
off? Can I think of the word
04:23
prophets kind of thing?
04:23
prophets? Yeah,
04:25  Wayne
exactly. Yeah, I must
04:25
think about growing one Trev
04:27
because obviously I'm just
04:27
coming across as a dumb piece of
04:30
wood. With smooth skin.
04:34  Trev
Why didn't Yoda have a
04:34
beard? Mostly Jedi's did, most
04:37
Jedi's have beards. That used to
04:37
be wise and stuff. Yes, I'd have
04:41
beards. such as qui gon and Obi
04:41
Wan Yeah, exactly. That shows
04:45
you Alec Guinness dude. Yes. He
04:45
shows you that. That is how you
04:50
know that's that that's that
04:50
that's a mark of intelligence
04:53
and wisdom.
04:54  Unknown
Yes. Yeah, definitely.
04:54
So
04:57  Trev
if anybody has got the
04:57
complete history of being I've
05:00
probably got in a book books,
05:00
which is actually quite
05:02
interesting subject in itself,
05:02
isn't it? Just sort of bring it
05:05
on. Leave us a voicemail with
05:05
the www.
05:08  Wayne
memo podcast.
05:10  Trev
I know. pretty small set
05:10
of facts about beards for
05:13
history. I know. I actually got
05:13
my key ring. I've got like a
05:17
beard coin. Yes. Which is like
05:17
the right to wear a beard
05:22
because you actually had to pay
05:22
beard tax. It was just another
05:27
way of extorting money out
05:27
people. If you wanted a beard.
05:30
You had to pay beard tax.
05:30
Imagine that.
05:35  Wayne
It cost you a fortune to
05:35
spend on other stuff.
05:42  Unknown
He can't afford to
05:42
groom it because he taxed on it.
05:48
So why do people why didn't Why
05:48
did you grow a beard Trev?
05:56  Trev
Basically, because once my
05:56
hair, I'd cut my hair off. I
06:01
want because I've had all styles
06:01
of beards. I haven't always had
06:04
a big beard my brother has
06:04
forever had he grew out but you
06:08
basically when you're growing a
06:08
beard. I kind of grew in stages
06:12
because it was really kind of
06:12
quite fashionable in the kind of
06:16
90s that sort of grungy or just
06:16
have a goatee, wasn't it? Yes.
06:21
That was the thing to grow. And
06:21
I was so desperate to grow a
06:24
beard and a mustache. I think
06:24
goatees were that were the 90s
06:30
kind of version of the 70s
06:30
mustache definitely. Yeah burt
06:36
reynolds, Magnum p i. Yeah. That
06:36
that was mainly because ever
06:40
touch. I know a lot of the
06:40
American army and police have
06:43
just tattoos now case and the
06:43
village people and the village
06:46
people. Yeah. Yeah. Which is not
06:46
so mad. Not manly. So
06:51  Wayne
we're not going there
06:51
this week.
06:52  Trev
Yeah. Yeah. And yeah, so
06:52
that was the thing. And I think
06:56
that's the next thing. And then
06:56
the goatees come in, and then it
07:00
progressed from then and
07:00
obviously. Now when you look at
07:02
goatees, it's all very David
07:02
brent, isn't it? It's all of
07:06
Yes. Yeah, I grew up I got, so
07:06
desperate to grow, get a goatee.
07:12
I remember having kind of bum
07:12
fluff, or that kind of like,
07:17
Prince mustache. And I thought I
07:17
think footballers massage was 11
07:21
years aside. Basically, I
07:21
actually used my mom's mascara
07:27
to color it. Did you look like
07:27
Errol Flynn? Yes. Robin Hood,
07:33
coming down from the bathroom.
07:33
And my dad was like, What have
07:37
you got on your face? It was
07:37
just and the weird thing is I've
07:43
never saw my dad with a beard or
07:43
mustache. Really? No. Yeah, not
07:47
my brother. Obviously. Full on
07:47
have kept him for years. But
07:52
yeah, neither not my dad didn't
07:52
have a beard. Normally you find.
07:56
You know, that kind of
07:56
thingapparently runs in the
07:57
family. Can't remember If your
07:57
dad Keith ever have a beard.
07:59
Yeah.
08:00  Wayne
If you look at every
08:00
single photo up until 20 years
08:05
ago or so? Yeah, beard. I'd only
08:05
knew him as a man with a beard,
08:10
which is odd. Yeah. And it's
08:10
really strange. Because when he
08:13
shaved it off, I was about 20.
08:13
Something like that. 20, early
08:16
20s. And I come home from school
08:16
or school at 24. I was that far
08:22
behind at school? from work?
08:22
Come over. to redo that year,
08:28
eight times. About I come come
08:28
home from work. And people can
08:37
tell that I'm that dumb To be
08:37
fair, but But yeah, come from
08:42
work. And he was there with no
08:42
and I couldn't take him
08:44
seriously. And he was telling me
08:44
off at the time. And I was like
08:47
you You're not my dad.
08:49  Trev
He took me ages. I shaved
08:49
mine off. Before I grew this
08:54
big. And my wife was nearly in
08:54
tears. She was like, Who are
08:59
you? Uh huh. I really weird with
08:59
our beard as well because I've
09:04
got to have some form of facial
09:04
hair. Because I just looked like
09:08
a surprised balloon. Surprised
09:08
this mouth I'm the male
09:15
equivalent of a blow up doll.
09:21  Wayne
I think you've only once
09:21
isn't obviously I saw you when
09:24
he was a school child in senior
09:24
school. Only since we've been
09:30
adults I've only ever seen you
09:30
once. shave off your beard. Once
09:34
in all that time you added the
09:34
smaller beard obviously. But I
09:36
mean once you come into work
09:36
with no shaved a long time. This
09:40
is 25 years ago or something.
09:40
But yeah, but other than that,
09:44
you've always had a beard. Yeah.
09:46  Trev
I was the goatee then
09:46
obviously that got a bit and
09:49
then the chin strap come in. I
09:49
sported the chinstrap for ages
09:53
bit of a noel edmunds going on.
09:53
Which was really hard. That was
09:57
maintenance and having a big
09:57
beard because yeah To get the
10:00
line Yes. And that was a night
10:00
yeah, shopping. And then
10:04
obviously, I read in a band and
10:04
in the music and all the grunge
10:08
thing was at noon and our bands
10:08
on white zombie and I decided to
10:12
grow the the goatee bit up out
10:12
of the front. So I had just a
10:16
long wizardy bit at the front.
10:16
And in the end you just look
10:20
like a bit of a Tinker you look
10:20
a bit like catweazle I kind of
10:25
have always shaped it quite
10:25
well, but in the end, you just
10:27
think let's just let the whole
10:27
thing go. And obviously it was a
10:31
big thing to have a beard, you
10:31
know, four or five years ago,
10:35
three or four studies now. But
10:35
um, yeah, and then obviously I
10:38
got involved with the sort of
10:38
grooming side of it. Yeah, with
10:43
the beard oil and beard bombs.
10:43
And, you know, I'm like any
10:46
anything.
10:47  Wayne
Anything you're into you
10:47
to the enth degree you're into
10:50
it. And
10:51  Trev
that's funny thing is I've
10:51
never ever grew a mustache or a
10:54
beard for Movember. No, yeah.
10:58  Wayne
Explain what Movember is?
11:00  Trev
Basically, a month in
11:00
November. The November month
11:03
where people don't shave or grow
11:03
or grow a really crackin
11:08
mustache for charity.
11:11  Wayne
And everyone looks I
11:11
chose Atlas for him.
11:13  Trev
He's good. Yeah, I do like
11:13
the mustache look in an ironic
11:17
kind of Freddie Mercury. Why? I
11:17
don't think or kind of old
11:22
cowboy. tombstone Sam elliot in
11:22
the in The Big Lebowski. Or like
11:28
Kurt Russell in tombstone.
11:30  Wayne
You tell em I'm coming
11:30
and hells coming with me
11:34  Trev
I'll be your Huckleberry
11:34
this year. Like a really good
11:37
mustache. Yeah, no, it's like,
11:37
if I ever do shave my beard off.
11:42
I will look a bit like cutting
11:42
your hair. They say that you
11:44
should have it cut in it's got
11:44
long hair cut in a mallet.
11:47
Nobody's gonna say you lose your
11:47
stream probably would lose. But
11:52
yeah, yeah, basically I would
11:52
shave it off and just keep the
11:55
tash because I've got a very
11:55
long Tash now. Yeah, the hardest
11:59
thing of course growing a long
11:59
time.
12:01  Wayne
Oh my god. The diasters
12:01
you've had with Guinness and
12:04
things we can Oh, yeah,
12:05  Trev
exactly. entropy is I use
12:05
a device now. Called a mo guard.
12:11
And the wonderful things I
12:11
thought they were a bit of a
12:13
joke. I think they were actually
12:13
I was
12:15  Wayne
that the one you use on
12:15
the glass?
12:17  Trev
Yeah, they're amazing
12:17
things are you are used one at
12:19
work for drinking tea and stuff.
12:19
Because they just stopped
12:23
getting in such a mess.
12:23
Basically, I think they were
12:26
devised from the old Victorian
12:26
kind of when obviously the
12:30
Victorian guys had really, yes,
12:30
Trump had COVID mustaches and it
12:37
would be inside the cup a little
12:37
kind of level that you know,
12:40
your your mustache sat on while
12:40
you drunk so held it up. And
12:45
some clever guys seen that and
12:45
thought, why don't we make a
12:49
portable and make them out of
12:49
plastic to fit on? And yeah, I
12:52
thought they're a bit of a joke.
12:52
But honestly, they you know,
12:55
they are a marvelous invention.
12:55
You know, we definitely works
12:58
because used to I mean, because
12:58
at first when you grew the long
13:02
mustache and beard you used to
13:02
shave the mustache, didn't you
13:05
optimize to trim it? But to be
13:05
honest, it makes your beard look
13:09
a bit naff if you've got a
13:09
really heavily trimmed mustache.
13:12
I get it
13:13  Wayne
Yeah, cuz it does look
13:13
cooler.
13:14  Unknown
Yeah, if you've got a
13:14
whole he's a real nightmare but
13:18
you had
13:19  Wayne
froth growing growing in
13:19
it didn't you before.
13:21  Trev
Now the stupid little
13:21
things but it uses a bit of Tash
13:26
wax in it not like really kind
13:26
of old Victorian sculptured but
13:31
just enough to kind of keep you
13:31
keep it out your way I do that
13:35
every day. But just now I was
13:35
like Believe it or not buying in
13:38
the cellar tape because I do
13:38
some Christmas presents. And as
13:41
you're buying it to cut it I can
13:41
find a pair of scissors and you
13:44
should never do that because
13:44
like my age my teeth are falling
13:46
out it was just sanitized with
13:46
just sticking to my Tash and
13:51
pulling the hairs at night me
13:51
really is but it's worth it in
13:55
the end because I my advice if
13:55
you've got a really cool big
13:59
beard and you're gonna trim
13:59
mustache, persist with it and
14:05
grow it out.
14:06  Wayne
Is there certain people
14:06
that suits better? I mean,
14:09
obviously suits you, we know
14:09
that but is there a certain type
14:12
of facial shape or something?
14:15  Unknown
I think
14:16  Wayne
does everyone look better
14:16
with a beard?
14:18  Trev
I think so. I think you've
14:18
got our have your I think the
14:25
misconception is big burly men
14:25
should have a big beard. I don't
14:31
really buy into that is very
14:31
manly. And if you've got
14:34
tattoos, there's a certain image
14:34
that goes with it. But I think I
14:38
think the only thing is a bit
14:38
like tattoos. If you're very
14:41
very thin. It could look a bit
14:41
wispier stuff. It doesn't seem
14:47
to sort of fan out it doesn't
14:47
grow go have a decent sized chin
14:52
hence a chin full of win I think
14:52
if you've got a small chin it
14:54
can look a bit weaker with a
14:54
beard which would be
14:59  Wayne
nice yeah Going to looks
14:59
too boyish. And then you've got
15:02
a big beard, which is manly, it
15:02
just looks a bit
15:05  Trev
easier. So certain people
15:05
wouldn't I don't think would
15:09
suit a beard. I like to think
15:09
I'm one of the lucky ones. It
15:12
does. Yes, I'd like to be it. At
15:12
this age, it covers up 8 chins
15:20
of mine. Avoid that that's
15:20
that's a good thing. Yeah. Then
15:26
again, perhaps we get onto the
15:26
techniques of sort of shaving
15:29
and keeping your beard trimmed
15:29
and stuff, which I do not very
15:32
often, but I don't do it because
15:32
you have to. But one of the
15:36
biggest misconceptions with with
15:36
guys growing beards is they
15:39
shave their neckline too high.
15:39
Yes. Because that ends up like a
15:44
chin strap. And you just because
15:44
it doesn't work, you've got to
15:47
let it there's an old saying
15:47
that women should marry a guy
15:53
with a beard. who grew up
15:53
growing a beard because the
15:57
patients of growing a beard
15:57
because it is so frustrating.
15:59
Sometimes I look at my own
15:59
thing. I could just get rid of
16:03
this or shave it right away down
16:03
because it just it's just a
16:05
nightmare. But
16:06  Wayne
the work you've put into
16:06
it already makes it worthwhile.
16:09  Trev
I've got a good beard but
16:09
I've been involved in the
16:12
circles I mean with you, you
16:12
know there's loads of guys with
16:15
better beards and have longer
16:15
beards and stuff. That's very
16:19
gracious trev what he said you
16:19
can't do best you can't go where
16:22
I've been. I've Amsterdam beard
16:22
competitions and stuff like
16:26
that. without, you know,
16:26
noticing that. So it's a bit
16:30
like anything, but you can't.
16:30
It's very difficult, especially
16:34
social media nowadays, to look
16:34
at all these beard models. And
16:39
they're being you know, they're
16:39
they're so sculptured they're so
16:42
good. That you think oh, you
16:42
know, my beard had never looked
16:45
like that. Take it as your own
16:45
beard and fill out the hair
16:47
thing we were talking about last
16:47
episode? Yes, its own what
16:51
you've got. Yes, I make the
16:51
best, like the best of it.
16:55
Because there's always going to
16:55
be someone with a better beard
16:58
than you there's always going to
16:58
be someone with a bit attached
17:00
in you. So a bit like with you
17:00
with the bodybuilding stuff,
17:04
there's always gonna be
17:07  Wayne
you know, upset me today
17:07
Trev by telling me that goatees
17:10
are out of fashion because
17:10
that's the only thing I can grow
17:12
at the moment so
17:14  Trev
I feel really sorry for
17:14
some people just can't grow
17:17
them. Some guys just can't not
17:17
properly. Yeah,
17:19  Wayne
I cannot go proper one.
17:19
No, no, not like you
17:21  Trev
know, it's not good. When
17:21
you say, poor old some fellas
17:25
are just that just the hair just
17:25
grows in that sort of position.
17:31
You're just gonna look like a
17:31
woodwork change if you grow that
17:34
out. Yeah, definitely. Yeah,
17:34
exactly. Yeah. He was a good
17:39
fella. But yeah, going back over
17:39
to
17:42  Wayne
Bob, maybe maybe I tell
17:42
you what trev will give people a
17:45
little bit of fun and knowledge.
17:45
We have a couple of cash
17:49
questions in test trev. And
17:49
hopefully people can learn
17:52
something along the way I've
17:52
given you. I think I've given
17:55
you a good passage this time,
17:55
because you've got one question,
17:58
which I'm pretty sure you'll get
17:58
straightaway. And two multiple
18:01
choice questions, which I'm
18:01
pretty sure you get. So you'll
18:03
feel good. You'll feel good
18:03
about Test trev again. Okay, you
18:09
know, I could give you the
18:09
answers beforehand and make it
18:11
even easier, but I don't really
18:11
want to go down that road.
18:13  Trev
You know, my emails before
18:13
this. I would know. Exactly. And
18:17
then maybe a little bit of
18:17
pressure. Because you you there
18:20
is pressure. Whoo.
18:21  Wayne
Exactly. This is this is
18:21
your subject.
18:24  Trev
Yeah. So I'll be glad.
18:28  Wayne
Well, it's time for test
18:28
trev
18:36  Trev
That the good guys who did
18:36
that they had beards.
18:39  Wayne
They definitely had big
18:39
metal beards. So if you I'm I'm
18:45
99.9% sure you'll get this first
18:45
question, but people might find
18:48
it interesting. What is the
18:48
meaning of the word
18:51
pergonaphile?
18:53  Trev
That's a person that loves
18:53
beads or buy? That's exactly the
18:57
definition of it. Yeah.
18:59  Wayne
I say, yeah, a good
18:59
answer. That is, yeah,
19:03  Trev
again, I had to look that
19:03
up years ago, but it's something
19:06
that I see all the time now.
19:06
Yeah.
19:10  Wayne
So just to give you Yeah,
19:10
sorry, it took me a while to
19:14
find it, but
19:15  Trev
I didn't really didn't
19:15
really need the applause. The
19:17
thing
19:17  Wayne
is, I was gonna do the
19:17
clap myself. But then I thought
19:19
it sounds sarcastic. I'm just
19:19
doing it on my own. Oh
19:21  Trev
my god, this
19:22  Wayne
is sarcastic. Yes. Spot
19:22
on. So it's a pergonaphile, is a
19:27
person someone who loves beards?
19:27
is that it doesn't reference men
19:31
or female male or female. Yeah,
19:31
really good to be somebody who
19:34
loves
19:34  Trev
guys. Touch my beard and
19:34
stuff like that. Yeah.
19:38  Wayne
That's a grey area. Yeah.
19:38
You don't like it? I can tell
19:42
that because you
19:44  Trev
gracious of it. And they
19:44
asked you Yeah, if they just do
19:48
it or tug on it. You don't tug
19:48
on some lady's boobs.
19:54  Wayne
In the 70s he was okay
19:54
apparently.
19:57  Trev
Apparently. Apparently.
19:57
Yes. You Wouldn't you wouldn't
20:00
just kind of, so I don't really
20:00
know what gives people the right
20:06
to think they can just touch it,
20:06
you know? Yeah.
20:09  Wayne
Yeah. Okay, so novelty or
20:09
something. Yeah, just Oh, yeah.
20:12
just ask , I was going Oh, do
20:12
you mind if I if I touch it?
20:15  Trev
Yeah, yeah, I agree. But
20:17  Wayne
yeah, I have seen you get
20:17
yeah get rather shirty with
20:22
people
20:23  Trev
tag on it. Yeah. Just pull
20:23
on it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Why
20:27
would you do that? Again?
20:27
Obviously,
20:30  Wayne
they're just rude.
20:30
pogonaphiles, obviously. But
20:32
yeah, there's a context for the
20:32
word for everyone. Yes. And
20:36
pogonology is the study of
20:36
beards. Yeah, so yes. ive done
20:42
that? Oh, you're obviously you
20:42
would? Yeah, you have to? And
20:45
now you are the teacher? Yes.
20:49  Trev
Watch now and he doesn't
20:49
read anything anymore.
20:53
Next question.
20:54  Wayne
Is it okay? Yeah,
20:54
exactly. You can carry on your
20:57
study forever. And while you're
20:57
growing. So question two is a
21:01
multiple choice question trev
21:01
to give you every chance. The
21:05
rate at which a beard grows is
21:05
genetic, but is also linked to
21:09
what other division of the human
21:09
male physiology and the art the
21:14
possible answers are the rate of
21:14
his sexual activity. Like the
21:19  Unknown
rate,
21:21  Wayne
you'd like to say that
21:21
just now we really wouldn't go
21:23
any further. Or the rate of his
21:23
heartbeat? The size of his
21:27
wisdom teeth, or the length of
21:27
his nose?
21:33  Trev
For some reason my
21:33
instinct straightaway said
21:36
wisdom teeth. I don't know why.
21:36
He sounds ridiculous.
21:43  Wayne
your one for the
21:43
ridiculous truth. Hmm. Yeah. So
21:46
yeah, the rate of his sexual
21:46
activity, the rate of his
21:48
heartbeat the size of his wisdom
21:48
teeth? knows,
21:52  Trev
that's gotta be
21:52
testosterone, isn't it? Well,
21:56  Wayne
I can't say at the moment
21:56
until you give me your answer.
22:00  Trev
Oh, god, I'm gonna go for
22:00
potluck. I'm gonna go with
22:02
wisdom teeth.
22:03  Wayne
Ridiculous gonna go with
22:03
wisdom to know. I think this
22:09
this one? I think is that one we
22:09
need? The lack
22:15  Unknown
of your silence
22:16  Wayne
answered your own
22:16
question. You answered it
22:18
correctly in in your Yeah, that
22:18
is exactly because supposedly,
22:24
the rate of sexual activity
22:24
increases testosterone. And
22:28
hence testosterone is linked to
22:28
that how your beard grows? So it
22:33
makes sense. You actually
22:33
answered that to give BP fair,
22:35
but I you know, you did say but
22:35
I understand why you probably
22:38
would go with was
22:39  Trev
so ridiculous that it
22:39
could be true.
22:42  Wayne
So if you want to grow a
22:42
cracking beard, just make sure
22:44
you're active.
22:45  Unknown
Basically. You have to
22:45
have a partner. What
22:49  Wayne
does that say about you?
22:49
I mean, obviously, you're in a
22:51
much better time than I am
22:51
always.
22:54  Trev
Do. You have to have a
22:54
partner that depends on or can
22:57
you
22:58  Wayne
a good point? I didn't
22:58
actually Delve that far into it.
23:00
Yeah, do can you do it by
23:00
yourself? But you're asking, Can
23:03
I grow cracking beard when I'm
23:03
single?
23:06  Trev
Do another kind of meaning
23:06
for the word cracking? One out.
23:13  Wayne
I think this This podcast
23:13
is just gone into the explicit
23:16
section. The question for you
23:16
the last question trev. In Roman
23:24
days shaving rather than beards
23:24
was the fashion. What did
23:28
shaving represent? Was it a
23:28
transition from boyhood to
23:33
manhood, be the first time one
23:33
cast a vote? c, enlistment to
23:39
the army, or D to mark a
23:39
contract of marriage
23:46  Trev
seemed to be so good to
23:46
see all the time is
23:51  Wayne
the C in this case was
23:51
enlistment into the army. Would
23:55
you reckon a bit too basic
23:55
though? Like basically sometimes
23:59
good it was you know,
23:59
testosterone, why am I saying
24:01
anything?
24:05  Trev
We say Oh,
24:11  Wayne
they say listen into the
24:11
army. beards in Roman times were
24:15
grown to represent mourning. So
24:15
if you went into mourning, you
24:19
grew a beard. And no say they
24:19
shaved it. Yeah. So now,
24:23  Unknown
we've all learned a
24:23
little bit. You don't want to
24:25
hang around me too long there.
24:27  Wayne
No, exactly. Yeah, do too
24:27
many people die and you have to
24:30
have everyone dropping dead
24:30
every day to grow a beard like
24:32
yours.
24:34  Trev
It'd be awful. my best
24:34
friends are Zombies. Yeah. Yeah,
24:39  Wayne
exactly that. So yeah, so
24:39
that's the end of test trev for
24:43
this. Yeah, it was all right. So
24:43
I think we should help help
24:46
people you did. All right. I
24:46
think you know, they keep it as
24:49
multiple choice to be fair,
24:49
because it actually is more
24:51
people I think better for people
24:51
to learn from Exactly. Yeah. So
24:55
maybe we can help people now
24:55
Trev. This is your specialty
24:58
subject. So maybe growing A
24:58
beard you've decided to grow
25:01
beard?
25:02  Trev
What? What?
25:03  Wayne
What's the tips? How do
25:03
you Where do you start? I mean,
25:05
obviously you just don't shave
25:05
for a start. But where do you go
25:08
from there?
25:10  Trev
Patience is the key. Yeah,
25:10
loads of peak loads of guys grow
25:13
into a certain length. And then
25:13
they give up. I found I've never
25:18
particularly got itchy skin
25:18
underneath my beard. So I was
25:23
quite lucky there but if you use
25:23
beard oil on it straight away,
25:27
you've only got like half a
25:27
decent stubble and oily and
25:30
obviously sometimes it might,
25:30
might play with your skin a bit,
25:34
but that helps it doesn't
25:34
actually do it virtually
25:37
anything for your beard.
25:37
Basically it is for your skin
25:40
underneath it. So that kind of
25:40
helps the follicles and it will
25:45
grow healthier, and it will take
25:45
away that kind of itchy I found.
25:51
Yeah, as I said,
25:52  Wayne
How long does that go on
25:52
for?
25:55  Trev
dependents because
25:55
obviously everyone's different
25:57
genetically. Yes, peoples do.
25:57
beards grow in different shapes
26:02
different manners. I still
26:02
obviously you've got to use
26:06
beard oil all the time when you
26:06
grow a decent beard is just part
26:10
of the grooming process. But to
26:10
the other thing you just will if
26:16
you get stray hairs if you're
26:16
going to trim it yourself which
26:19
is very very dodgy you've got to
26:19
be always best if you grow it to
26:24
a certain length and it starts
26:24
looking a bit hobo get it
26:27
trimmed professionally
26:30  Wayne
because you could barbers
26:30
offer this sit now travel
26:32
especially
26:33  Trev
yeah course they did it to
26:33
be honest. Yeah, barbers do. But
26:36
there are specialists guys that
26:36
do beards and stuff. I wouldn't,
26:41
I wouldn't trust I just an
26:41
actual barber. There's no done
26:45
beards before. But it's too
26:45
tempting to do yourself. And
26:51
I'll admit, I do cut some of the
26:51
little curly bits. Because for
26:54
such a straight haired guy, I've
26:54
got quite a curly beard. And and
26:59
the bits especially the side
26:59
guys always suffer with the
27:02
sides. They just kind of flip
27:02
out and stuff. Yeah, so it's
27:06
nice to get those lines in. But
27:06
if you are going to trim it,
27:10
take the minimum off frequently,
27:10
not frequently. But when you're
27:15
trimming it, don't just hack
27:15
lumps off. Because what you're
27:19
doing is you're hacking up off
27:19
one side, and you think oh, that
27:21
doesn't look even then you're
27:21
cut out another lump off there.
27:25
And then it won't look even in
27:25
the end. You just end up
27:27
trimming it, trim it, trim it
27:27
back. And all the gains you've
27:30
got over those three or four
27:30
months you've lost. So one go
27:34
Yeah, you've just got to take
27:34
the minimal off you can in those
27:37
areas. And just slowly slowly
27:37
catchy. Catch up, beard. Yeah,
27:47
slowly slowly catchy beardy.
27:47
That sounds that sounds cool.
27:49
That is one thing. And you you
27:49
were very adamant Trove when you
27:54
grow and yours like you wanted a
27:54
full a beard
27:57  Wayne
rather than a point.
27:58  Trev
Yeah, mine does point
27:58
quite nicely now go to a certain
28:02
thing. The other thing is don't
28:02
shampoo it with normal shampoo.
28:07
Once you've got a decent growth
28:07
on use of actual beard shampoo
28:13
especially because if you
28:13
shampoo with normal shampoo, it
28:17
takes out some of the oils and
28:17
stuff like that. And if you if
28:21
you got a really kind of dirty
28:21
job you're in a construction or
28:24
something like that, then you
28:24
possibly will have to champion
28:29
your beard every day but I only
28:29
wash mine three times a week.
28:34
Normally after I've like run or
28:34
in the gym, and if you once you
28:40
have shampooed it and you've
28:40
washed it always put beard oil
28:43
in afterwards. I leave mine like
28:43
once or twice a week without
28:47
anything in just to get the
28:47
natural oils back into it. Yes I
28:51
people they seem to think
28:51
they're not this fallacy that
28:54
people say and I know people can
28:54
probably contact us and say oh
28:59
it's been scientifically proven
28:59
that beards are dirty on it I
29:03
know I get quite a few bits and
29:03
pieces here by just repeating
29:06
yourself but it's as clean as my
29:06
hair you honestly I keep this as
29:11
clean as you keep it exactly
29:11
that's a fallacy when people saw
29:15
you know germs and stuff
29:18  Wayne
not keeping your packed
29:18
lunch in there also
29:20  Trev
exactly is you know save
29:20
it for later mate Is that what
29:22
you're doing? Yeah. But yeah,
29:22
but don't go over the top in the
29:26
washing of it. You know and
29:26
treat it and don't and if you're
29:30
going to obviously want to get a
29:30
comb get a D if you're going to
29:33
get a brush get a decent boars
29:33
hair one and if you're going to
29:36
get a decent comb get a wooden
29:36
one because if you get a plastic
29:41
one you get static, which
29:41
obviously isn't great for you
29:44
for your hair. That's
29:45  Wayne
good advice.
29:47  Trev
The wooden ones are the
29:47
best ones. But there's a lot to
29:50
be taken in and
29:52  Unknown
loads of what was the
29:52
name of the the beer glass
29:55
protection for your mustache.
29:56  Trev
Oh mo guard
29:58  Wayne
my God. Yeah, but they're
29:58
generally available. But for
30:00
people
30:00  Trev
other thing if you're
30:00
going to buy products oh yeah
30:03
that well that's quite difficult
30:03
to get hold of they are you will
30:06
find them on social media
30:08  Wayne
which is why we can put
30:08
some links up on our website
30:11  Trev
for people yeah, there is
30:11
you could link it to their
30:13
Instagram page and stuff. I
30:13
think Amazon have kept them at
30:16
some point. I think I've got a
30:16
couple of them. We'll put some
30:19
links in the
30:19  Unknown
show notes. Yeah,
30:20  Trev
exactly. But the other
30:20
thing I will say as well for
30:23
like beard products is I know
30:23
you everyone I know some some
30:27
fellows I know do use their
30:27
stuff and are very happy with it
30:30
and that but try not to kind of
30:30
everything's got to be natural,
30:35
as well if you're gonna buy any
30:35
kind of beard shampoo, beard
30:38
balms, there's obviously beard
30:38
balm that keeps in set in in
30:42
place so
30:42  Wayne
maybe trev we'll talk
30:42
about literally but rather than
30:45
growing it with what the actual
30:45
products as soon as you come
30:48
into the oils and everything
30:48
yeah, so what's in your what's
30:51
in your cabinet, basically the
30:51
to look after your beard,
30:54  Trev
I've got beard oil. I've
30:54
got Tash wax, beard butter,
31:02
which I tend to put on before I
31:02
got a bed just because obviously
31:05
will dry out at night. When
31:05
you're sleeping. Yes. And to
31:09
have keep it in place I'll use
31:09
like beard balm. But to say all
31:13
those should be natural as I say
31:13
it's very tempting to go with
31:16
the big manufacturers, but the
31:16
smaller ones go with them
31:21
because that way they get the
31:21
they get your business you know
31:26
it's hard starting off a new
31:26
business like that.
31:29  Wayne
And then you promote some
31:29
trip, don't you? Yeah. Would you
31:32
want to plug them now?
31:34  Trev
Thomas's company Yeah,
31:34
well banging beards. Yeah,
31:36
great. Great, guys.
31:38  Wayne
Yeah, you've got a code
31:38
you'd have you got a coder cuz I
31:40
people,
31:42  Unknown
thedude, yeah, thedude
31:42
if you use the code that dude
31:44
What do they say? get a discount
31:46
This guy? Yeah,
31:46  Trev
yeah, exactly. Yeah,
31:46
they're really good stuff. It's
31:49
all natural. We put a lot of
31:49
thought into it
31:53  Wayne
Which would you say
31:53
should be you know he's tempted
31:55
to go the other is the branding
31:55
important with beard products is
31:58
a part of it, the branding and
31:58
everything as well as just the
32:01
product itself.
32:02  Trev
You gotta be really
32:02
careful because because be just
32:05
seen as so kind of gnarly and
32:05
that kind of stuff. Don't be
32:08
kind of taken in with a skull on
32:08
the bottom or, you know, do you
32:13
notice? Yeah, exactly. Some of
32:13
that is just all imaging isn't
32:18
there probably there are
32:18
obviously big companies that
32:21
have got really good stuff even
32:21
though they've got like a gnarly
32:24
logo but if you go with stuff
32:24
and do a little bit of research
32:27
as well you know that's the
32:27
thing it's got you know, I've
32:30
read a few testimonies and stuff
32:30
like that but yeah the guys I I
32:34
operate with a very good they do
32:34
sort of everything The only
32:39
thing he doesn't do is Tash wax
32:39
by no there's talk about him
32:42
moving into that
32:43  Wayne
is that a different
32:43
product trev to them.
32:46  Trev
And again, you get
32:46
different forms of Tash wax.
32:50
Because obviously, everyone's
32:50
hair is different. So basically,
32:52
you've got to get one that suits
32:52
you so trying stuff, you can get
32:56
little pots of it. So you can
32:56
try stuff out and I'll tell me
33:00
the other thing as well. If you
33:00
grow a beard and your girlfriend
33:03
or your wife or your partner
33:03
fella or whoever doesn't like
33:08
you having a beard. The good
33:08
thing about using oils and balms
33:12
and stuff is is scented. So yes
33:12
makes you smell nice. And to be
33:17
honest, that's one of the
33:17
biggest. That's great when like
33:20
a bit like when someone's smell
33:20
someone's nice aftershave I've
33:24
smelled you're not literally
33:24
like up close, but I can smell
33:27
it sometimes when you've got in
33:27
the car noises pleasants really
33:31
weird. I've never had a lot of
33:31
guys through their work or
33:35
through the coal will ever
33:35
suffer from really cracked hands
33:37
and stuff where I use beard oil
33:37
and beard balm every day and
33:41
every night you know my hands
33:41
have grown because I've always
33:46
been lubricated with oil you
33:46
know that's that's really good
33:51
as well. But yeah that that is
33:51
do you research and kind of and
33:57
again if you know if you know a
33:57
guy or you you know live he
34:02
lives across the street that's
34:02
got a really cool beard go and
34:04
ask him what he users I've had
34:04
quite a few guys asked me or go
34:08
with of asking for their
34:08
boyfriends or their husbands
34:10
what I usually mine on the big
34:10
communities really cold like
34:14
that.
34:15  Wayne
All the guys be happy to
34:15
be approached in this way trev.
34:19  Trev
thoughts. Most of them are
34:20  Unknown
Yeah, I would have
34:20
thought so there's always gonna
34:22
be a few I guess. Yeah,
34:22  Trev
my brother's got a really
34:22
big beard and he doesn't use
34:25
anything any he's just lazy to
34:25
be honest, but to get away with
34:29
it. To get a good shave and
34:29
stuff, a bit of beard balm, but
34:35
a little bit goes a long way.
34:35
Don't just drown it in product
34:39
because it's just not good for
34:39
it. You know you you'll get the
34:40
was well, you know that all the
34:40
money is gone into the marketing
34:42
idea of some of the companies
34:42
have actually got like the
34:45
amount of drops to use for like
34:45
the size of beard. But you get
34:49
to know that after you get those
34:49
conditioners as well as
34:53
shampoos, you normally find that
34:53
the beard conditioners are
34:59
Better than one a bit like
34:59
shampoos if you use two separate
35:03
ones they'll be better on they
35:03
rather than use one but yeah
35:07
there's tons of stuff on the
35:07
market now. But you know that
35:10
don't be taken in by the all the
35:10
marketing aspects. Just to
35:14
e honest even not the L'Oreal
35:14
d firm though they're supposed
35:17
o be used Oh, one overly keen
35:17
n it, admittedly. But can't th
35:19
y guys really like that? I kno
35:19
. And not the advert was ju
35:22
t ridiculous. They'd like a guy
35:22
with small beards. They didn't e
35:25
en have beards. I think I've
35:25
een you the bigger beard than
35:29
the one t
35:33
and not into the product.
35:34
Don't get me wrong, I suppose
35:34
use that kind of, if they had
35:37
these really epic beard, some
35:37
people wouldn't be I do there
35:42
wouldn't be a get there. So it
35:42
gives them a bit of false hope.
35:44
Because you think oh, if I use
35:44
this, I'm gonna be like,
35:47
Gandalf. You're not gonna use
35:47
your genetic. If he's not going
35:51
to do that. It's not going to do
35:51
that. But you don't just said
35:55
but it's a big thing. Don't
35:55
judge yourself by other people's
35:58
beards either. Because I say I
35:58
was shy ages ago is having a
36:02
beard obviously where I've been.
36:02
We've lived where my beads
36:05
taken.because Sam, does it give
36:05
you ideas?
36:07  Wayne
When you go to like, a
36:07
festival or something? Do you
36:10
look at somebody being gone? I
36:10
could do that or
36:12  Trev
not really into the
36:12
sculpture of it. You know, I've
36:15
done lots of kind of, like the
36:15
competitions I've been to and
36:19
stuff people do, like add this
36:19
up, but I'm not really into it.
36:22
One of the weirdest ones I saw
36:22
was a brother sending to me was
36:26
one in America. There's a really
36:26
good TV show about actually. And
36:30
he actually managed to sculpt
36:30
his beard into like a cage
36:34
around a cage. His head. I don't
36:34
know how he did he can find it.
36:40
But it was shocking. He was just
36:40
like, but again, he doesn't do
36:43
your beard a great deal of good,
36:43
but he's obviously had hairspray
36:46
and stuff on there. And that and
36:46
again, you don't want to be
36:49
putting anything like that on
36:49
hairspray on because you've
36:52
already got no no I don't nobody
36:52
smokes any more really. indoors
36:56
in that, but you've only got to
36:56
get near a naked flame. Like if
37:01
you said, Hey, imagine for a
37:01
stage and it just gets sticky
37:06
and it's not good for it. And I
37:06
just have no place. So yeah,
37:09
that's not that that's a bit of
37:09
a no no as well. Well,
37:12  Wayne
we're gonna be
37:12
approaching next week. We're
37:14
gonna This is a two doubleheader
37:14
Really? Because Yeah, the doors
37:17
that have opened up for Trevor,
37:17
since you've been growing his
37:20
beard. Sounds like an oxymoron.
37:20
But Trevor's busy with his
37:24
beard, basically.
37:25  Unknown
Yeah.
37:26  Wayne
We're going to talk about
37:26
that next week. And it's theres
37:28
beard clubs. And Trevor has a
37:28
whole social life and
37:33  Trev
for the beards for charity
37:33
and stuff a big producer. Yeah,
37:36  Wayne
great. The charity work.
37:36
Yeah.
37:38  Trev
Again, keeps giving
37:39  Wayne
you guys a friend is a
37:39
friendly. We discussed that
37:42
community. Yeah. Next week's
37:42
episode. Yeah. So I think that
37:47
leads us up to the summary
37:47
nicely. trev so I think that
37:50
that means I should go for this
37:50
one. Because I didn't do this
37:54
last week. I forgot everyone. I
37:54
apologize. No, I didn't feel bad
38:03
about that. But so I'm not going
38:03
to be silly enough to say is it
38:06
cool to have beards or not?
38:06
Because
38:09  Trev
Yeah, it is at the monent.
38:09
Some guys they look great, you
38:13
know? So but if you're going to
38:13
grow it as I say, the key to it
38:17
is patience. Patience is the key
38:20  Wayne
is how long you've been
38:20
nurtured, but seven years. So in
38:23
that sense,
38:24  Trev
yeah, probably that five
38:24
years six. I remember
38:28  Wayne
putting up a picture for
38:28
us or sent you a picture that we
38:31
took of us about four years ago.
38:31
And you replied small beard. So
38:35
you obviously thought it wasn't
38:35
impressive at that time. They
38:37
still look long, you know long
38:37
in comparison to what you used
38:40
to have
38:40  Trev
to have out that but it
38:40
I've obviously had a lot taken
38:44
off in various stages to treat
38:44
to tidy up. I've just let go of
38:49
being done it myself. The issue
38:49
is obviously with the COVID
38:52
thing, you can't you couldn't
38:52
have a beard trim or anything so
38:56
I've just saw tampered with it
38:56
myself. We just been in
38:59
education as well. Yeah.
38:59
Learning how to do that a little
39:02
bit, which is good.
39:03  Wayne
I'd definitely if I
39:03
thought if I could grow a proper
39:05
beard. I've definitely dabbled
39:05
with it. But I just I've had a
39:08
go and I I just haven't got the
39:08
genetics to make it work for me.
39:11
So
39:12  Trev
I suppose patchy beards is
39:12
Yeah, why did you bother and you
39:16
know, I was no remedy for it.
39:16
You just make the best of what
39:19
you've got if you've got the
39:19
genetics to tell you the other
39:22
thing very quickly as well which
39:22
does help is a healthy
39:24
lifestyle. i know we always talk
39:24
about this
39:26  Wayne
of protein and protein.
39:26
determines
39:30  Trev
if you eat a lot of rough
39:30
sunlight. Yes. A lot of rubbish
39:34
awful even the drink sunny
39:34
delight.
39:38  Wayne
We're not sponsored by
39:38
them and I
39:40  Trev
want to get a healthier
39:40
lifestyle is good for you.
39:46
eating lots of rubbish, is it
39:46
gonna be
39:48  Wayne
yeah reflects in your
39:48
body looks like yeah, like
39:51
anything? Yeah, definitely. So
39:51
yeah, next week's episode, we'll
39:55
be talking discussing more what
39:55
kind of doors your beard can
39:58
open for you again, has to be
39:58
Trevor's speciality. He's very
40:02
involved with that.
40:04  Trev
hairy doorstop.
40:06  Wayne
If there's anything you
40:06
guys out there want us to
40:09
discuss it. It's been midlife.
40:09
Yeah, leave us like go to
40:16
www.amlopodcast.com. Leave us a
40:16
voicemail or female about
40:20
beards. And so yeah, I will
40:20
leave Trevor message to answer
40:23
questions about beards always
40:23
happy to help where we can get
40:26
involved, you know, we'll
40:26
feature some of the calls on the
40:30
on the podcast. And so, until
40:30
next time, thanks for listening.
40:36  Trev
It's been a pleasure
40:36
again,
40:37
always.
40:38  Wayne
Cheers triple c'est la
40:38
vie.
