episode 8: TV Nostalgia: Strike First, Strike Hard, Strike Nostalgia [transcript]

Date: 28th February 2021

Name of show: A Midlife Less Ordinary

Episode title and number: Se1Ep8   Strike First, Strike Hard, Strike Nostalgia

 Brief summary of show:

This week’s episode will give you all those nostalgia feelings for your old favourites and they are sure to be included, well ok, especially if you’re a man in your midlife as it may have a slight testosterone fueled bias. Who doesn’t remember the classic A-Team intro music and monologue on a typical Saturday evening, or the introduction to our screens of “The Hoff” before he was a top pop star in Germany and eyeing up the ladies on the beach in Baywatch? They will all be making an appearance here.

Bullet points of key topics & time stamps:

Trev: 8:12

·       that's the thing. Isn't there always a peter pan? Ladies actors? Yeah. actresses. They're always slightly older because I think the two girls in it are like 23 and 24. Yes, but they're playing like 16 year olds. Yeah, exactly. So that that shows you how, you know but your what what shows you like to see come back man. Well, if we're if we're talking about from that, that kind of era, the kind of ones if we're talking the kind of action kind of things that are going on.

Wayne: 21:50

·       Yeah, it does. Does it in my mind still devalue the person but it even though that's probably not the case. It's, you know, the cinema is gonna need our help when we come out of what's currently and all we've got to look forward to is in the no no big fan I know. And I'm not a great fan is James Bond. And that's it. Yes. gotta save cinema.

Wayne: 24:46

·       because you want to be young again. It's about experiencing the feelings you had when you were young and bringing them into your middle age really, isn't it and then enjoying Yeah. And talking about I want you to have some feelings now for some questions drive because it's time is testing your intelligence in test drive?

00:01  intro
You're listening to a mid
00:01
life less ordinary, the weekly
00:06
podcast giving you the lowdown
00:06
on becoming a cool older dude.
00:12
The good times are not afraid of
00:12
memory, it's time to start
00:15
loving them again. And here are
00:15
your hosts, Wayne and Travis.
00:23  Wayne
Welcome back, everyone
00:23
and welcome to another episode
00:26
from a mid life less ordinary
00:26
got it right this time Trev. And
00:31
this episode is called strike
00:31
first strike hard strike
00:34
nostalgia. And I'll let Trev
00:34
introduce himself and tell you
00:38
what it's about.
00:39  Trev
Well, here I am, again,
00:39
wanting to talk to you lovely
00:42
people. And we're going to talk
00:42
about TV. And the effect is
00:47
having at the moment with the
00:47
shows like Cobra Kai, they're
00:50
kind of nostalgic trip is
00:50
bringing back. I know wine and I
00:54
were both quite big fans of
00:54
Cobra Kai, sort of thing you
00:58
don't want to admit I remember
00:58
watching the first series and
01:00
thinking Oh, yeah, hold on.
01:00
What's this about? I did. I'm a
01:03
big fan of The Karate Kid films.
01:03
I saw all of the cinema when I
01:07
was a kid. Did you similar
01:07
cinema one? Yeah. So Karate Kid
01:11
at the cinema. Yeah, I see. I
01:11
got slapped about I've gotten to
01:15
see the first Karate Kid feel a
01:15
bit ironic. It was. It was an
01:22
awful thing was it was quite
01:22
kind of
01:25
racist. We had these oriental
01:25
gents behind us young kids. And
01:30
we decided to give him a bit of
01:30
chip. And yeah, they were gonna
01:34
see The Karate Kid and they saw
01:34
see the foil I just saw that. It
01:41
was a bit of a warning with the
01:41
loss of their face, but they
01:43
actually slept as about a bit
01:43
which
01:47  Wayne
by the time the film
01:47
finished, you could get your
01:49
revenge.
01:50  Trev
Well, that's why to be
01:50
honest. Yeah, because everyone
01:52
had that feeling. Didn't know
01:52
but I come out of a karate kid
01:54
feel more rocky film? Yeah. That
01:54
they could take on the world.
01:58
Exactly. I don't know about you,
01:58
but we both lived really near
02:03
the town. So we never got the
02:03
bus but I remember walking past
02:08
the bus stop after guy to see I
02:08
think it was the second guy kid
02:11
field. And there was people
02:11
practicing karate on the on the
02:15
bus.
02:17  Wayne
which I think was which
02:17
is not the same from into the
02:19
dragon when he gets to the
02:19
island.
02:22  Trev
Oh, well yeah, Mr. Han,
02:22
Mr. Herman. Yeah, Mr. Han? That
02:26
is that that is my favorite kung
02:26
fu film of our mind to the
02:30
dragon. Just got everything
02:30
you'd want. Yeah.
02:35
They're all great. I'm a massive
02:35
Bruce Lee fan. I love Jackie
02:38
Chan stars. not so keen on Jet
02:38
Li as I heard he uses a stunt
02:41
man which is a bit lame. Big
02:41
Tony jar fan. I know we're
02:45
getting off the subject
02:47  Wayne
is still nostalgia.
02:48  Trev
Nostalgia, but he's got
02:48
everything under the dragon
02:51
another all old gripe Big Boss
02:51
Fisher fury but and the Dragon
02:56
has got the hidden Ireland and
02:56
the big boss there with the
03:01
claw. It's got everything is
03:01
john Saxons in it. Williams is
03:07
great unit is it's just amazing.
03:07
And, and the Jackie Chan bit?
03:12
Yeah, of course. Yeah. Jackie
03:12
Chan introduced. Rosie Bovary
03:15
sort of shoulder Disney's Yes.
03:15
So one of the one of the hoods
03:17
in it. And I've ever been new, I
03:17
think slowed down really didn't
03:21
read on DVD to see if it was
03:21
definitely Jackie Chan. And I
03:28
love that. And yeah, that kind
03:28
of film mythos. is vast and
03:33
beating the predator so isn't
03:33
it?
03:34  Unknown
Yes.
03:35  Trev
It's really I love that,
03:35
that kind of love. Where does
03:38
this come from? I think that's
03:38
great. But anyway, you're going
03:40
back to the TV nostalgia. Yeah.
03:40
Cobra Kai has really set it off.
03:45
Everybody loves it, don't they?
03:45
Absolutely. Yeah, it's
03:49
everything is gone.
03:51  Wayne
So I was just gonna say
03:51
that Cobra Kai is gonna be the
03:54
most. nostalgia is a funny thing
03:54
in itself, because we've had to
03:58
get to this age middle age to be
03:58
able to have nostalgia, haven't
04:02
we? So yeah, and it's the 80s
04:02
mainly the 70s 80s. And Cobra
04:07
Kai represents something from
04:07
the 1980s perfectly would you
04:11
say?
04:12  Trev
Yeah, I think the biggest
04:12
biggest thing they've got right
04:15
with Cobra Kai is bringing back
04:15
the actual people that were in
04:19
it. Yes. The one guy notice it
04:19
spoilers because he's in season
04:23
three but is 1 billion now north
04:23
of nine it can be by looked it
04:27
up and it is right. Yeah. I
04:27
think they'll read somewhere or
04:30
heard somewhere that because
04:30
Ralph macchio produced it didn't
04:35
need a lot to do with it. And he
04:35
said he wouldn't bring a
04:38
character into it who he
04:38
couldn't get hold of to play
04:41
their actual bargain. Yes,
04:41
brilliant. Yeah, talking about
04:44
he must hold the production up.
04:44
And again, probably ruin some of
04:48
the storylines. But that's
04:48
magic. I I think Cobra Kai is
04:53
the one now but I think the one
04:53
that really threw it into the
04:58
main kind
05:00
vision was Stranger Things with
05:00
the whole 80s feel. Yes, it had
05:04
that kind of Goonies,
05:04
Poltergeist, et you feel. I went
05:09
to one of the Stranger Things,
05:09
secret cinemas. And I'll tell
05:12
you, secret cinema is a
05:12
brilliant. I'm not plugging them
05:17
Because I want to go free you
05:17
next time. But me and you've
05:21
done one of the Empire Strikes
05:21
Back when it was great. I did
05:25
the Blade Runner one, which I
05:25
thought was the best one I've
05:28
done. It was mind blowing. And I
05:28
did the stranger thing was one
05:31
as well. And that was ever so
05:31
good. But it's all about getting
05:34
the time. Right. Isn't it? The
05:34
look at the time. Yeah. Yeah.
05:39
What? What would what would you
05:39
like to see next? To be honest?
05:43
Why? Well, let's see if we quit.
05:43
Like you say no stranger things.
05:47
Yeah, you're right. I think that
05:47
influenced a lot of what's
05:49
happening now.
05:51  Wayne
But obviously, Stranger
05:51
Things is a new imagination.
05:54
It's not really know, isn't he?
05:54
Yeah, yeah, he gives Yeah,
05:57
exactly. And that's,
05:58  Trev
I remember seeing it
05:58
first. And I remember seeing the
06:00
titles or where they come up.
06:00
And I thought, these have got
06:03
this right. If this if the whole
06:03
TV show is like the credits,
06:08
then they've got it because I
06:08
thought the credits were my that
06:11
sets a tone to me. Yeah, you
06:11
know, exactly does. Yeah. And
06:15
it'll say if he's,
06:16  Wayne
if he's brought back
06:16
Karate Kid, which he has, I
06:19
mean, you just actually
06:19
explained something that I'll
06:22
elaborate on a bit that I've
06:22
heard that Ralph macchio has
06:25
been asked many times to bring
06:25
back Daniel laRusso. But that
06:30
the story is pitched to him. He
06:30
obviously doesn't want to sell
06:32
out because it was he hasn't
06:32
been working that much over the
06:34
last 30 years is
06:35  Trev
he had a big future didn't
06:35
he was in the outsiders.
06:38  Wayne
Exactly. Yeah, he was he
06:38
got typecast, but he loves the
06:41
Kraken. He has been asked to do
06:41
one with his son and he's like
06:44
Mr. Miyagi and everything else
06:44
but he's refused to do it. And
06:47
the reason he's done Cobra Kai
06:47
is because it's seen through
06:51
Johnny Lawrence's eyes
06:53  Trev
is a good take on the
06:53
story, isn't it?
06:55  Wayne
Yeah. is brilliant
06:55
because you know, they're
06:58
bringing back this thing about
06:58
was Daniel the real bully in The
07:01
Karate Kid because Johnny never
07:01
started any other fights, which
07:05  Trev
is one bit in it as well.
07:05
isn't a spoiler. It's just for
07:08
someone like me who's so nerdy
07:08
with heavy metal and stuff. But
07:11
he's actually one point he
07:11
actually wears like a scorpions
07:13
t shirt. Yeah, ban the
07:13
scorpions. And it's like, How
07:16
cool is that? Yeah. Yeah, Rock
07:16
me like a hurricane. Okay, yeah.
07:21  Wayne
cater to everyone.
07:23  Trev
Exactly. Yeah, that sums
07:23
it up. Now. There's other bits
07:26
in it. I won't ruin it for
07:26
people who haven't watched it.
07:29
But there's other bits that are
07:29
great. But yeah,
07:31  Wayne
what I bring back
07:31
everything, not even just people
07:33
they bring back older people.
07:33
They bring back items as well.
07:36
There's like, trophies to say,
07:36
but they don't the cars in it.
07:40
No spoilers. No, no, but I think
07:40
it's okay to say the funniest
07:44
thing I find about Cobra Kai is
07:44
that Ralph macchio is actually
07:48
six years older, when he's
07:48
playing the Mr. Miyagi role. And
07:52
he's six years older than
07:52
actually, Mr. Miyagi was
07:57
happening Pat Morita, who isn't
07:57
Pat Yeah, he
08:00  Trev
just looked he looked
08:00
older. Yeah, but he's, yeah,
08:03
he's 60 years old.
08:05  Unknown
Ralph, he, I think I
08:05
believe is around 60. He's he
08:08
looks good. But he was 23 when
08:08
he done Karate Kid. He looks
08:10
about 12 years he
08:12  Trev
that's the thing. Isn't
08:12
there always a peter pan? Ladies
08:14
actors? Yeah. actresses. They're
08:14
always slightly older because I
08:18
think the two girls in it are
08:18
like 23 and 24. Yes,
08:22
but they're playing like 16 year
08:22
olds. Yeah, exactly. So that
08:25
that shows you how,
08:27
you know but your what what
08:27
shows you like to see come back
08:29
man. Well, if we're if we're
08:29
talking about from that, that
08:32
kind of era, the kind of ones if
08:32
we're talking the kind of action
08:34
kind of things that are going
08:34
on. I mean, obviously karate kid
08:37
was a movie, what do you think
08:37
would be possible to do our
08:41
Well, they've got to be alive
08:41
for us. So that puts one of my
08:44
favorite ones Airwolf out the
08:44
picture.
08:47  Wayne
They're both gone. Yeah.
08:47
Ernest Borgnine god rest his
08:49
soul
08:51
and Knight Rider was tried to
08:51
come back and
08:54  Trev
jan michael vincent,
08:55  Wayne
Jan Michael Vincent. Yes.
08:55
Mr. Stringfellow Hawke. Anyone
08:59
is named after a strip joint
08:59
and, and a bird of prey is gotta
09:02
be cool.
09:06
I don't know but it's always a
09:06
good name. He's
09:12  Trev
some of the best names or
09:12
some of the ones that sports
09:15
nega has in films. Oh, God.
09:15
Yeah. But yeah, we were talking
09:18
about
09:20  Wayne
how we could do a whole
09:20
series is on.
09:24  Unknown
Yeah. But yeah, that
09:24
Stringfellow Hawke off stream
09:27
fellow Hawk Yeah.
09:30  Wayne
There might be a question
09:30
on Himalayas I'm not going to
09:32
elaborate too much more
09:33  Trev
exactly. But the only
09:33
thing is with that is that with
09:36
all these TV shows, they didn't
09:36
really have the budget so like
09:41
when you saw air wolf in the air
09:41
and fly and they were the same
09:45
shots virtually every episode.
09:45
Yes, yeah. When you're a kid and
09:49
that you don't really twig it Do
09:49
you care. But when you if you if
09:53
you watched it now, you'd be
09:53
like, well, I'm done. That was
09:56
that's the same once once you've
09:56
completed the Internet Movie
09:58
Database like you have There's
09:58
nothing. It's a race to be
10:02
criticized. That's
10:03  Wayne
your that's your big one.
10:03
Is it? I'd like to see a wolf.
10:07
But not obviously, when you
10:07
bring in new characters, it's
10:09
difficult to capture that kind
10:09
of Yeah. Which is what Cobra Kai
10:12
has done. So what would you be
10:12
your first choice? Isn't it?
10:15
Sorry, what has been done?
10:15
Knight Rider wasn't good. Trev
10:18
it was.
10:19  Trev
I remember obviously the
10:19
original I want a massive fan of
10:22
it then.
10:23  Wayne
But I think the second
10:23
one had to suck on my God. Well,
10:28
Val kill was voice the car. So
10:31  Unknown
that'd be It's cold.
10:31
Yeah, yeah, it was bad.
10:33  Wayne
Don't bother seeking it
10:33
out. What would you like to see
10:37
was?
10:41  Trev
I know, I think there's
10:41
space for the $6 million man
10:44
because boys and I was it'd be 6
10:44
billion now though. Wouldn't it
10:47
be more expensive? But again,
10:47
they did that with the six the
10:52
$6 million woman didn't they? or
10:52
something? bionic woman came
10:54
back with a go out of
10:54
EastEnders. And it failed. Yeah.
11:01
You couldn't have stupid stuff
11:01
like middle Mickey coming.
11:04
Mickey could show
11:06  Wayne
up. Now. That's sorry,
11:06
but yeah, that's another one.
11:13  Trev
Yes, it's been kind of the
11:13
films are quite good. I actually
11:17
quite well. What was the girl's
11:17
name minute. Wilma, waiting for
11:20
a change? Yeah, Wilma? Wilma.
11:22  Wayne
No mighty Smith.
11:24  Trev
Yeah, Wilma?
11:26  Wayne
I don't remember hearing
11:26
it hearing. That's right. Yeah.
11:32  Unknown
Well done.
11:34  Wayne
That wasn't one of the
11:34
questions. I'm not taking that
11:36
one off.
11:36  Trev
I would be pretty good. It
11:36
would be quite easy to do, I
11:39
think.
11:39  Wayne
Yes. Yeah. I think it
11:39
wouldn't have with Lee Majors.
11:44  Trev
Oh, it could he was he
11:44
needed to he needed.
11:47  Wayne
It needed a stamp man to
11:47
get out of a chair now I should
11:49
say.
11:51  Trev
The evil because he was
11:51
you know, he was he was Bruce
11:54
Campbell's. He actually stayed
11:54
evil did the TV show that was
11:58
really good. Yeah, the second.
11:58
The second series weren't so
12:01
great. They sort of run out of
12:01
ideas. But the first one was
12:04
great, but then that's what you
12:04
get when you get Sam Raimi to
12:07
produce it.
12:08  Wayne
Yes. wholesaler the
12:08
original people there. See? What
12:15
about some of the more obscure
12:15
ones Trev that probably only
12:18
went one season? Hope Yeah, I
12:18
was gonna say straight who
12:21
actually went a bit longer, I
12:21
believe but actually straight up
12:23
with the production was
12:23
brilliant. I thought that was as
12:25
good as Knight Rider. In some
12:25
sense.
12:27  Trev
It was just a bit of a
12:27
Knight Rider on two wheels.
12:30  Wayne
It was not necessarily a
12:30
bad thing.
12:33  Trev
The car works pretty.
12:38  Wayne
Well, there's Batman. Do
12:38
you remember that?
12:41  Unknown
Remember, that worked.
12:41
But
12:42  Wayne
there was 1.1 series.
12:42
Simon McCorquodale. Was it him?
12:47  Unknown
Was he the British guy?
12:47
Yeah,
12:49  Wayne
I believe he's Yeah, I
12:49
believe he passed away actually.
12:51
But
12:54  Trev
for some reason I remember
12:54
Ron pohlman being in something
12:57
similar to a TV show from the
12:57
American one. Yeah,
13:01  Wayne
I can at first thing I
13:01
remember him as alien
13:03
resurrection.
13:05  Trev
Now I thought it was
13:05
Manimal really gonna look into
13:08
that. If someone if someone
13:08
knows I'm sure. toman was
13:13
involved in something like that.
13:13
He might have been beating the
13:17
beast. Yeah, Vincent. Linda
13:17
Hamilton. Vincent. That's it. It
13:21
was Oh, no problem.
13:23  Wayne
Is that easy? Yes, it is.
13:23
Yeah. Well,
13:25  Trev
I can see it by the night.
13:25
Yeah, on the bike. Oh, boy. See,
13:33
I was a massive fan when I was a
13:33
kid still Ed now the Jerry
13:36
Anderson stuff. Yeah. And the
13:36
birds are sitting right Joan? I
13:39
was petrified. A Joe 90 days of
13:39
running hide behind the couch.
13:44
It
13:44  Wayne
hasn't been a joy 90
13:44
movie actually is it?
13:47  Trev
It would really work.
13:47
Yeah, it would. What was I
13:50
thinking of the other day? I was
13:50
thinking about something like
13:52
that. And I watched another
13:52
film. And basically, it was Joe
13:58
90, where they implanted Brian
13:58
Yeah. I think it was kind of
14:03
horror film. Actually. They
14:03
importantly, it was it was it
14:08
was it was the new David
14:08
Cronenberg son's film. And I
14:12
thought this clots really
14:12
similar. Yeah, they like put
14:16
brain implants into like
14:16
assassins. And I thought it's
14:19
just Joe 90 like an adult Joe
14:19
90. But now I look back and see
14:24
because I was too young to see
14:24
originally all of these by saw
14:27
him on all reruns. Thunderbirds
14:27
was the best for the country.
14:32
Scarlet was brilliant, because
14:32
of the they actually had real
14:35
evil on it. We've kept in black.
14:35
We treat just like Henry
14:39
Rollins, like medicine as hell.
14:39
But then the aliens were so
14:44
weak. They were just like as
14:44
illumined as bald was, weren't
14:46
they on you on Mars or you never
14:46
like couldn't afford to do the
14:50
budget. That was why for the
14:50
aliens you couldn't they didn't
14:53
have that.
14:54  Wayne
But it's about using your
14:54
imagination, which is why it's
14:56
so cool.
14:57  Trev
Yeah, they they did
14:57
actually I think The Japanese
15:01
did like a kind of manga cartoon
15:01
or Thunderbird. 2086. Yeah.
15:05
Which was pretty weak, to be
15:05
honest and obviously is the film
15:08
that Bill Paxton did, didn't he?
15:08
Yes, under bousfield? Yes. Which
15:11
wasn't great either. And
15:11
obviously, you got the new
15:14
Thunderbirds, the children, the
15:14
comic, the cartoon. I did try to
15:17
watch some of that and they're
15:17
done Captain scholar and that is
15:20
a bit weak. Yes, I'd like to see
15:20
that done. Right.
15:23  Wayne
Well as original,
15:23
animated or puppets or live
15:28
action?
15:29  Trev
Yeah, the last one they
15:29
did was a real letdown was
15:31
terrible. Yeah, was pretty bad.
15:31
Yeah, that would even if I use
15:36
some of the more obscure ones
15:36
like fiber, lecture five, or one
15:40
of the ones I needed for worlds
15:40
TV, I believe and again, if
15:43
someone if I'm wrong, Bob Sure.
15:43
I'm pretty pretty right. can put
15:47
me right, but they did one
15:47
called Secret Service was, which
15:50
was like a vicar. Who was an
15:50
older double agent. Yeah, yeah.
15:56
He was really, really good. They
15:56
used actually a lot more kind of
15:59
hands on that to make it look
15:59
realistic. Yeah. The actual
16:02
puppetry he looked they weren't
16:02
not really wooden. They actually
16:06
really look like a lot people
16:06
this time. Yeah, that those
16:10
would be
16:12  Wayne
that would be looking at
16:12
here what it could be.
16:15  Trev
I don't, because I don't
16:15
watch because I'm at work on a
16:18
Saturday. I don't see any Kids
16:18
TV. So I don't know if there's
16:22
like programs like that we use
16:22
the word 80s was the Saturday
16:25
Swap Shop and our Saturday
16:25
morning TV. Yeah. It was three
16:29
hour shows. Yeah. Well, they are
16:29
they are their kids like that. I
16:33
don't
16:33  Wayne
think they're productive
16:33
because of the spread across
16:35
satellite channels. Now. The
16:35
production of these programs
16:39
aren't great anymore. Obviously.
16:39
There's only four channels.
16:42
There are free channels even.
16:42
But yeah, I mean, we used to I
16:46
mean, I remember when Swap Shop
16:46
turned up at a park in South End
16:49
and saying I want to watch it.
16:49
Yeah, no, keep checking code,
16:52
Rusty. So
16:53  Trev
yeah, yeah, I remember
16:53
that, too. But what why do you
16:56
think it used to be those kind
16:56
of TV shows that it's always
17:00
like a presenter and a puppet.
17:00
Exactly. Yeah. Go and get a dark
17:04
green. dark green Gill balm get
17:04
fresh. Brilliant. He
17:08  Wayne
was leaking Zach on a big
17:08
breakfast.
17:10  Trev
I've actually got that on
17:10
DVD was a big breakfast on zig
17:14
and zag the whole complete
17:14
zigzag. But yeah, what why do
17:18
you think why did they Why are
17:18
puppets so why don't you have
17:21
with them? It's bizarre, isn't
17:21
it? Yeah. It's like, Oh, we
17:26
can't have two presenters. We
17:26
have one and a puppet. doesn't
17:30
really work now does it? Yeah.
17:30
No, I suppose is the thing is
17:32
they look cuddly and cute. Yeah.
17:32
Brings kids to it. Yeah. Well,
17:37
look,
17:37  Wayne
I welded all the way down
17:37
with Keith Harris. Yeah,
17:40  Trev
yeah. It was a big I was
17:40
more of a Cardinals fan. Yeah, I
17:42
was to be fair, because he had a
17:42
bit a bit of cheekiness about
17:49  Wayne
can you name and this
17:49
isn't part of test trip, by the
17:52
way, but we will put baby Do you
17:52
remember who done the production
17:56
or most of them American? It
17:56
shows that from Knight Rider for
18:01
guy.
18:02  Unknown
What company? Yeah,
18:03  Wayne
there was a big
18:03
production company in the 80s.
18:05
That done most of them shows. Do
18:05
you remember? who it was? You
18:09
know, it says I said, Yeah.
18:13  Unknown
Obviously weren't Canon
18:13
or Globus? Well, no, no,
18:15  Wayne
it was Glen. A Larson
18:15
production.
18:18  Unknown
Yes. All of us plan a
18:18
loss.
18:20  Wayne
Is that the same as well?
18:20
Maybe? I
18:22  Trev
think yes. I think it was.
18:22
Yeah, I actually thought the
18:24
movie was quite good in a way.
18:24
That was the one with Liam
18:27
Neeson, wasn't it? Yeah. And
18:27
yeah, I thought that was all
18:29
right. Yes. Okay. Got
18:32  Wayne
it. So why not bring it
18:32
back as a TV show? I think I
18:35
don't think it works so well as
18:35
a film to be honest, because
18:37
there's loads of action films
18:37
that you can watch. Third,
18:39
similar to that, but as a TV
18:39
show, it's
18:41  Trev
very true. Yeah. Yeah. I
18:41
think some things are just super
18:44
suited to to a TV show. Yeah.
18:44
Because I very clearly, you go
18:48
back on TV shows and a nice,
18:48
hugely popular with a gang very
18:52
quickly on the Mandalorian.
18:52
We've done Star Wars, but I
18:56
really thought the Mandalorian
18:56
would be a completely different
18:58
show to what it is. Yes. In my
18:58
mind, when I saw it was coming.
19:02
I had this image of a totally
19:02
different TV show. And when I
19:06
kind of watched four or five of
19:06
them, I thought, Oh, it's not
19:10
what I thought. But that doesn't
19:10
matter has been hugely
19:12
successful. And why, by opinion,
19:12
don't mean
19:16  Wayne
I think you're just Yeah,
19:16
I know. It's hard to please try
19:19
this day and age, you know, but
19:19
I think what you said, I think
19:23
Trump is glad it exists. argue
19:23
Yeah, and it looks great. We've
19:27
said this before, but you know,
19:27
they could steal they're trying
19:31
to pander to too many.
19:32  Trev
Not the biggest thing I'd
19:32
want Britain to be brought back.
19:37
The other one I've just
19:37
remembered is V Juventus. Yeah,
19:40
that was bought back. I watched
19:40
it good, was it?
19:43  Wayne
No, but yeah, but what
19:43
this is what winds me up more
19:46
about anything they do these
19:46
days. They bought that back and
19:48
I got into it because I loved
19:48
the original Wii. And I watched
19:51
it and they just dropped it at
19:51
the end of the second season
19:54
with no resolution to anything
19:54
and I'm just like, Oh, thanks
19:57
for that. Why not even just do
19:57
one episode where you Finish the
20:00
thing you know?
20:01  Trev
Yeah, exactly. Yeah, but
20:01
if it has if it doesn't then to
20:05
be a TV executives are ruthless.
20:05
Yeah. If it doesn't get the
20:10
views it doesn't get the people
20:10
watching. They will just cut it.
20:13
It will just go Yeah, they don't
20:13
care. My is all money now. So it
20:17
doesn't it doesn't matter. Yeah,
20:17
the one that was probably the
20:20
biggest influence for me as a TV
20:20
show back in those days was
20:24
again, I didn't see the original
20:24
I saw the reruns was Planet of
20:27
the Apes. Yes. thing is with
20:27
that is it had the effects of
20:34
the movie for the team? I think
20:34
you've probably the first one to
20:36
ever have that. It had the movie
20:36
effects for a TV show. Yeah,
20:40
didn't it?
20:41  Wayne
Yes, it looked like the
20:41
movies didn't it?
20:43  Trev
was so good. That's what
20:43
was so that Sunday, urbanists I
20:47
met the cast I met Ronnie
20:47
McDowell in South anybody they
20:51
opened up market data and actual
20:51
market a petrified me because
20:56
I'd like general URIs on the
20:56
whole the whole she's the law.
21:01
But yeah, it was like a tool. I
21:03  Wayne
did. Imagine a star that
21:03
big now open in a market.
21:07  Trev
It just doesn't fit. But
21:07
that that's the thing. It's if
21:12
it had the effects of the film.
21:12
I know obviously, everything's
21:16
on big budget now the TV shows
21:16
like, I don't know. What do you
21:21
think the first one was?
21:23  Wayne
Do you think the sopranos
21:23
or band of brothers would are
21:25
where all the money went into
21:25
it? Like the big productions?
21:28
Yeah,
21:28  Trev
this people prefer to be
21:28
on TV actors now. prefer to be
21:32
here. Definitely. Because
21:32
they're in field. That's
21:34  Wayne
where the money is. Yeah,
21:34
it is. Yeah,
21:37  Trev
it's quite I don't get me
21:37
wrong. I love the idea. I think
21:39
he's great. But it does take it
21:39
away a little bit from big
21:44
movies and cinema experiences
21:44
with people like Woody Harrelson
21:47
and Matthew McConaughey on your
21:47
TV screens at home.
21:50  Wayne
Yeah, it does. Does it in
21:50
my mind still devalue the person
21:53
but it even though that's
21:53
probably not the case. It's, you
21:57
know, the cinema is gonna need
21:57
our help when we come out of
21:59
what's currently and all we've
21:59
got to look forward to is in the
22:03
no no big fan I know. And I'm
22:03
not a great fan is James Bond.
22:06
And that's it. Yes. gotta save
22:06
cinema.
22:08  Trev
It mostly has, isn't it?
22:08
Yes. I tell you what the other
22:12
talking of like the Super Mario
22:12
nation or whether this was a
22:15
part of it. What was really
22:15
which I loved when I was a kid,
22:19
and when I found out who did the
22:19
music for it was another. Do you
22:25
remember? Starfleet? He stopped
22:25
the starfish series
22:30  Wayne
design feet just off now.
22:30
Because obviously Starfleet is
22:33
Star Trek.
22:33  Trev
Yeah, yeah. Starfleet.
22:33
Brian made the music to it. It
22:37
was like well, I'm sure it was
22:37
like a Japanese because I was
22:39
really into one he managed as
22:39
well. Yeah, well, it was like a
22:44
puppy, kind of version of
22:44
Fukushima Thunderbirds, but I
22:47
think they bought it from Japan,
22:47
whatever it was central Anglia.
22:52
You remember the regional TV
22:52
thing? Yes. And honestly, it was
22:56
really good. And it was one of
22:56
the first ones to have like a
22:58
transformer in it. Wow. With
22:58
like, different parts of the
23:01
ship would form a huge robot.
23:01
Yeah, it was quite a lot prime
23:05
mind is the music for it. Well
23:05
as the LP as well. Yeah, the
23:10
puppet thing has always been a
23:10
big thing for the year Starfleet
23:13
was great. If you look it up.
23:13
They cuter hazard they could
23:17
bring back I actually thought
23:18  Wayne
that was quite I was
23:18
gonna say but why it was the the
23:21
addiction to making the making
23:21
these movies is comedies with
23:23
Ben Stiller and people like
23:23
that.
23:26  Trev
I think because they're so
23:26
came off
23:29  Wayne
it. I suppose.
23:30  Trev
You can't take him
23:30
seriously. Yeah, really? Can you
23:34
that's the thing. Yeah, I think
23:34
you when you look back, I
23:37
suppose
23:37  Wayne
as a movie. Yes. Yeah. If
23:37
it was a TV show, you could make
23:40
it. Yeah,
23:41  Trev
I tell you what I thought
23:41
was a real good masterstroke. We
23:44
Starsky and Hutch, was getting
23:44
Snoop Dogg to be there. Yeah,
23:50
that was, you can't think of
23:50
anybody else not know.
23:55  Wayne
When they were great, but
23:55
they're not the sort of thing I
23:56
want to watch over and over. You
23:56
know, I struggled to watch a
23:59
bunch of once no nostalgia
23:59
again, isn't it?
24:01  Trev
Yeah, but I really enjoy
24:01
those I found like, what we're
24:04
going through now this lockdown
24:04
thing. I find myself going back
24:09
to though these 80s and 90s
24:09
films, comfort all these little
24:13
happen is easy to understand.
24:13
You're going back to better
24:17
days. And I said, but that's how
24:17
I felt like in the last six
24:21
months. I've watched all the
24:21
Star Trek movies again. A lot of
24:25
Burt Reynolds movies again, I've
24:25
watched like Kai accompli, what
24:28
else I've watched, but not a lot
24:28
of older films again.
24:33  Wayne
It's made you feel good.
24:33
It's lucky we've got this back
24:36
catalogue at our age and this is
24:36
what being midlife is about, you
24:40
know revisiting your past. It's
24:40
not all about vegan stuff.
24:43  Unknown
Yeah, exactly. It's not
24:43
about movies anymore. It's not
24:46  Wayne
because you want to be
24:46
young again. It's about
24:48
experiencing the feelings you
24:48
had when you were young and
24:50
bringing them into your middle
24:50
age really, isn't it and then
24:53
enjoying Yeah. And talking about
24:53
I want you to have some feelings
24:56
now for some questions drive
24:56
because it's time is testing
25:01
your intelligence in test drive?
25:07  Trev
Right. This is the kind of
25:07
metal version of Telly addict.
25:10  Wayne
Telly addict said I bring
25:10
that back I could do that. But
25:13
there's too many channels to
25:13
test people want to be
25:17
difficult. So for questions this
25:17
week trip again, I'm not trying
25:22
to catch you out. I just want to
25:22
play along at home. You know you
25:25
some of you will know these
25:25
questions to these
25:28
big budget TV shows. So first
25:28
one, I'll be very surprised if
25:33
you don't get this is. What is
25:33
the name of the Dukes of Hazzard
25:38
car?
25:39  Trev
General Lee
25:43
Of course he would they take
25:43
what they cover? Yeah,
25:45  Wayne
because it's the southern
25:45
thing, isn't it? Yeah. Because
25:47
he's just a general is the flag.
25:50  Trev
Yeah, exactly. They would
25:50
actually take the Confederate
25:52
flag off that Yeah, you lose
25:52
everything. Don't
25:55  Wayne
just want me Yeah, he's
25:56  Trev
losing his cool about that
25:56
TV show. Yeah, by doing that, it
25:59
was good. Good side point.
26:01  Wayne
Question two. Which one
26:01
of the A Team was the pilot
26:07  Trev
Murdock Yes. Hmm. howling
26:07
mad Murdock.
26:17  Wayne
You got what clapping off
26:17
there. Got the clap. You've
26:19
added the one and a half times.
26:25  Trev
For episode
26:27  Wayne
number three. What actor
26:27
was famous for the line? Nanu
26:31
Nanu.
26:33  Trev
Robin Williams Mork.
26:35  Wayne
Yes. Well done.
26:40  Trev
Okay, give me the applause
26:44  Unknown
Yeah, well, damn it.
26:44
Yeah. Imagine the uproar if they
26:47
bought someone. Yeah, you
26:47
couldn't do it. That was he's a
26:49
unique talent. Yeah, he was.
26:49
Yeah, busted. I can't think not
26:54
Will Ferrell I don't want
26:54
welfare ordering. Yeah, like
26:57
Will Ferrell but he wouldn't be
26:57
right. Yeah. See, leave it where
27:01
it is. That
27:03  Wayne
did not come at a happy
27:03
days.
27:05  Unknown
It did. He wasn't Yeah,
27:05
I think
27:06  Wayne
it was an episode because
27:06
Star Wars have come out or
27:09
something like that. Or they
27:10  Trev
bring an alien. Yes,
27:10
exactly. I think that's well
27:13
done. Yeah. Happy days. I could
27:13
bring back Yeah, that wouldn't
27:18
surprise me. That would be
27:20  Wayne
catchy. Henry Winkler
27:20
could still do it. Or it could
27:23
be good.
27:24  Trev
So many Ben Stiller movie.
27:24
Yeah. I don't think it depends.
27:30
You know, is Adam solid Adam saw
27:30
Adam Sandler. Sorry. Yeah, I
27:32
don't think
27:34
Yeah, because I don't think he
27:34
is relevant as all the as the
27:39
old ones is it people remember
27:39
happy days? I tell you what
27:42
brought her happy days back big
27:42
time was that was a video buddy
27:45
Holly. Yes. Yes. That was really
27:45
well done. Yeah, that was that
27:49
was just another spike Jones
27:49
trick. Yeah, same as sabotage.
27:52
By the Beastie Boys. That man
27:52
had an all yes for doing music
27:56
videos. He did that.
27:57  Wayne
With movies. Not bad
27:57
either.
27:59  Trev
To be fair, his movies are
27:59
great. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, that
28:01
that's that's not and I was
28:01
talking about top five films,
28:05
which I can't do is not not
28:05
trying to tempt you. And I
28:08
actually forgot being john
28:08
malkovich in there. Yeah. blew
28:11
my mind when I saw it. Yeah,
28:11
nothing was ever like it was
28:14
just I saw it in New York, which
28:14
was cool. Oh, yeah. Come out of
28:18
cinema.
28:19  Wayne
Oh, no wonder you think
28:19
so Highly of it anyway
28:21  Trev
. But isn't that easy? So
28:21
it's so different. And so quirky
28:24
just like, yeah, very good.
28:26  Wayne
I've seen quite a few
28:26
times.
28:27
Yeah, I mean, it's just, it's
28:27
just great. Yeah, but yeah,
28:30
Chris Jones. I dunno what he's
28:30
doing now, but no, I don't to be
28:33
on this Trev. Right last
28:33
question. Trev just get a bit
28:37
more difficult. But we have
28:37
mentioned this character
28:39
already. What musical instrument
28:39
does Stringfellow Hawke play
28:44
from a wolf
28:48  Trev
is he the title was wasn't
28:48
it
28:49  Wayne
Yes. This is the hard one
28:49
because I knew I'd need probably
28:53
get the others to play along at
28:53
home are you getting it Do you
28:56
all know
28:59  Unknown
I so badly want to say
28:59
violin
29:01  Wayne
oh let you have another
29:01
go but you know that should give
29:05
you a clue is in a Black Adder
29:05
kind of way. It's a violiny type
29:09
thing
29:12
another 80's show could come
29:12
back that was a brilliant
29:18
I said it's a slightly bigger
29:20  Trev
Oh, it was like the cant
29:20
even think what they're called
29:23
now
29:24  Wayne
You know what I
29:24
mean?don't you. Yeah, it looks
29:25
like a violin that that the hulk
29:25
would have. Yes.
29:29
Yes.
29:32
You could picture it but you
29:32
couldn't name it.
29:40
Cuz he's cool He's Stringfellow
29:40
Hawke and he plays a cello
29:47
Imagine if you told a girl that
29:47
from Tinder, you know you're on
29:50
Tinder. I'm Stringfellow. Hawke
29:50
and I play the cello.
29:55  Trev
You'd be like I'm a
29:55
helicopter pilot. Oh yeah. I've
30:00
I
30:01
go on missions.
30:04  Wayne
Really cool. And what was
30:04
the name of the people that
30:07
employed him?
30:09
It was was it the firm or
30:09
something? The firm was
30:14
something Yes. Dr. gaffer Ross
30:14
aka Jaffa
30:19
Jaffa yeah there was a doctor i
30:19
can't i mean i haven't revisited
30:23
it Dr. Jaffa he's seedless,
30:23
sorry but his personal life
30:27
coming into it now. Yeah, but
30:27
yeah, but yeah well done trip
30:31
that was a good performance on
30:31
that that questions this week?
30:34
Yes. The standard trip Yeah. So
30:34
you know, we got Cobra Kai check
30:38
it out if you haven't. I mean,
30:38
everyone's got Netflix, I'm sure
30:41
now but yeah, so if you haven't
30:41
seen it, watch it. You'll love
30:44
it.
30:46  Trev
Very quick subject to
30:46
those streaming.
30:49
You know, the one that kind of
30:49
is Cobra Kai was on the red was
30:54
on YouTube Red. Yeah, yeah.
30:54
Where did that go? Yeah, it
31:00
actually goes it didn't it
31:00
didn't actually come over to
31:03
England. I did it now in
31:03
America, I think attended the
31:07
one that's probably the least
31:07
successful. of all of those. So
31:12
is Apple's version, isn't it?
31:12
Yeah,
31:16  Unknown
they spend a lot of
31:16
money on it.
31:18  Trev
But have you seen some of
31:18
the stuff they've produced
31:20
Greyhound TV?
31:23  Wayne
Obviously but yeah, but
31:23
that's bad. Yeah, I watched it
31:27
Yeah, it's
31:29  Trev
and it was about an hour
31:29
and 10 minutes long show
31:33  Wayne
there's no character
31:33
development is there it's all
31:35
about
31:37  Trev
he's supposed to build
31:37
this thing and he's just like
31:39
you was expecting under see tree
31:39
when you watch he watched under
31:43
siege one and he's actually
31:43
already Yeah. The Voice it with
31:48
these action fields. You've got
31:48
speed. Speed on most Fast Pass.
31:54
You've got under siege on a big
31:54
naval boat. And then the second
31:58
one speed to on a train liner.
31:58
Under Siege to is on a truck.
32:05  Wayne
is 19. This is the 90s to
32:05
transport the general the decade
32:08
of transport.
32:09  Trev
Yes, no. Don't get me
32:09
wrong. I did enjoy watching
32:13
under siege.
32:14  Wayne
Yeah, just to again,
32:14
Casey right back in it. Casey
32:16
right off.
32:18  Trev
Honestly, as I saw over
32:18
and over again,
32:23  Wayne
or Erika eleniak.
32:25  Unknown
Yeah. Honestly, yeah.
32:25
jumping
32:27  Wayne
out the birthday cake.
32:27
Yeah. Tommy Lee Jones. Tommy Lee
32:30
Jones was in all of these
32:30
playing bad guys. Hey, yeah,
32:33
he's a rock star. And I also it
32:33
was easier.
32:38  Trev
I don't think we could
32:38
worry about spoilers. about
32:44
that. He's what he asked the
32:44
main who's in charge who's who's
32:48
the highest ranking officer to
32:48
kind of give him a rod. He just
32:55
shoots him in there. As bad as I
32:55
am. That's,
33:00  Wayne
that was a time of fun
33:00
again, and that that era is now
33:02
nostalgia to us, isn't it? Yeah.
33:02
From the early 90s. Obviously,
33:06
that
33:07  Trev
kind of family shows what
33:07
a load of them back and it was
33:11
all garbage that I haven't even
33:11
watched. It's not the guide. It
33:15
was. Mackenzie crook is it
33:18  Unknown
really was in the
33:18
office when he
33:20
Yeah, that was brilliant. Yeah,
33:20
the
33:22  Wayne
office is not the it is.
33:25  Trev
Now why exactly that was
33:25
garbage. It looks it's normal.
33:29  Wayne
I actually enjoyed the
33:29
first one they bought back the
33:31
year before there last year, but
33:31
2019 version. I actually quite
33:35
enjoyed it watching it with the
33:35
family. The one that was
33:38
released at Christmas 2020 Oh my
33:38
God, I couldn't even I know I'm
33:43
not being funny. Trev I know. I
33:43
sit through things even when I'm
33:46
not enjoying it. I wasn't
33:46
enjoying it. I turned it off.
33:50
Yeah, I didn't enjoy it. That'll
33:50
be gone.
33:53  Trev
I don't watch breakfast TV
33:53
anymore. Just because of what's
33:57
going on. I don't really want
33:57
to, but before this, and I think
34:01
the and you did speak about it.
34:01
But they had like some of the
34:04
gladiators on there. Yes. And I
34:04
thought they're gonna bring that
34:08
back because I thought they're
34:08
on there. They're gonna bring it
34:10
back. They're gonna bring it
34:10
back. Yeah, yeah. Oh, okay.
34:16
Because I could Yeah, I could
34:16
really, I could see jet again.
34:19
So the Oh, she's she still
34:19
works. I've
34:22  Wayne
seen her on morning TV
34:22
know, the kind of daytime TV
34:25
Sorry, no. She's a psychologist.
34:25
She helps people look at
34:28
therapy. So if you need any
34:28
help, and you want to see Jay
34:31
just higher and you can speak to
34:31
her.
34:34  Trev
I think I might do that.
34:34
I'll be looking at straight up
34:36
after because I might not need
34:36
any help. To do that. I could do
34:43
the handsome Jay says, I'm going
34:43
to go any further than that. I
34:46
don't know. You weren't really a
34:46
war fan. And no, no, it's the
34:50
other show in my early 20s and
34:50
it sounds so bizarre but the
34:55
guys I used to go drinking with
34:55
one of the guys was the first
34:59
one to His own flat. Yeah. And
34:59
on a Saturday night it was
35:03
ritual to go around his house
35:03
with a load of beer before we
35:06
went out to watch blind date. Oh
35:06
yeah, brilliant November his
35:10
next door neighbor knocking for
35:10
some reason and said, Oh, are
35:15
you guys enjoying the football?
35:15
Like mark the guy I was with was
35:20
like, we're not watching a
35:20
football we should walk in here
35:23
we realize like shouting and
35:23
cheering like what a football
35:25
match. And we were actually
35:25
blind date.
35:31  Wayne
How many people you know
35:31
we're on blind date? turf?
35:34  Trev
One? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I
35:34
had I had one and I got grabbed
35:42
by the throat by him.
35:44  Wayne
This is happening quite a
35:44
lot to you. Why do you want
35:46
people up like this? sock sock
35:46
is the worst is sarcasm. I can't
35:50
believe it. I've had to put up
35:50
with it.
35:56  Trev
And as enhanced by alcohol
35:56
Yes,
35:59  Wayne
yes, he can definitely do
35:59
testament to that.
36:03  Trev
The volume goes up and the
36:03
sarcasm goes up. So get together
36:07
it's like a little mini I find
36:07
it quite funny to be fair, but
36:13  Wayne
that's why I'm still
36:13
here.
36:14  Unknown
guy I knew there was on
36:14
there. Oh, yeah. It
36:17  Wayne
was a great that he's a
36:17
great but I bought that back and
36:20
it wasn't very good with Paul
36:20
O'Grady. It was pretty cool to
36:23
be honest. He's disappeared.
36:23
Thankfully, but he's doing dogs
36:26
in dog Battersea dogs. Oh, most
36:26
I mean, it'd be better as Lily
36:29
savage to be faithful right? I
36:29
don't mind.
36:33  Unknown
I actually quite like
36:33
Julian Clary as well.
36:35  Wayne
Yeah, no, he's da they're
36:35
clever people they're not they
36:38
know I've been a bit harsh there
36:38
but I think we should perhaps we
36:42
should go to the summary and
36:42
just summarize what we think so
36:49
yeah, we'll do it so quickly
36:49
we'll go through I programs that
36:53
you should definitely watch out
36:53
we've already said watch Karate
36:55
Kid Cobra Kai is what you you'd
36:55
have hours of entertainment
36:58
there.
36:59  Trev
I think so. Yeah. Anything
36:59
else? Really? Well, I just think
37:05
I'd like to say really don't
37:05
bring these some programs back
37:10
which are bound to be tempted to
37:10
narrow the success of Cobra Kai
37:14
there must be looking at
37:14
everything to do don't bring
37:19
them back unless it can be done
37:19
in a decent cheesy kind of way.
37:24
Yeah, don't try to take the
37:24
thing is do it tongue in cheek
37:27
that's the whole subject that's
37:27
the whole crux for me if you're
37:30
doing tongue in cheek is good
37:30
the Evil Dead thing was done
37:34
quite tongue in cheek have the
37:34
right people involved but don't
37:36
get people involved that don't
37:36
understand in the first place.
37:40
No food trip Yeah, I
37:41  Wayne
think that sums it so we
37:41
look forward to whatever they
37:44
bring back next and hopefully
37:44
it's good we'll watch it anyway.
37:47
Yeah gives us a retirement our
37:47
listeners.
37:50  Trev
If you can think of
37:50
anything they should bring back
37:52
or anything we forgot that you
37:52
really enjoyed from your kid.
37:55
Touch the little blue microphone
37:55
button on our website and leave
37:58

38:03

38:25
interjected with the with the
38:28
message is which will be quite
38:28
good fun. I reckon. So.
38:31  Trev
There you go.
38:32  Wayne
That's the nostalgia that
38:32
strike first strike car. Gone
38:36
trip.
38:37  Trev
Just last sigh it's been
38:37
super smashing. Great.
38:41  Wayne
I'm glad you didn't do
38:41
something from Jimmy Savile Row
38:43
fairest. But I shouldn't have
38:43
even mentioned in I'm sorry,
38:49
everybody like you. We want to
38:49
say something now. Right? That's
38:52
summarized nicely. Thanks for
38:52
