episode 9: Movie Nostalgia: Wayne & Trev's Excellent Adventure [transcript]

Date: 7th March 2021

Name of show: A Midlife Less Ordinary

Episode title and number: Se1Ep9  Movie Nostalgia: Wayne & Trev’s Excellent Adventure

 Brief summary of show:

This week movies are getting the nostalgia treatment with a trip down memory lane to some of the most influential movies of our generation. Who can remember one of Clint Eastwood’s lesser known roles in Firefox or the fabulous stop motion effects used in the original Clash Of The Titans? For sure there will be some Ghostbusters mentioned and as much as it pains them, Wayne & Trev may be forced to quickly give mention to those familiar female favourites Dirty Dancing and Pretty Woman.

Bullet points of key topics & time stamps:

Trev: 2:59

No, not so but now going back to bill and Ted did quite a lot. The second one I must admit, the second one's pretty good. some really cool bands in it. Primus was I was really excited to privacy the movie and not to mine five, nine Moore's in it, which was really good. But and the introduction of death in it was great, wasn't it?

 Wayne: 8:22

I thought that one so I'm glad we can agree on something. So we know what we do when we can actually all catch up we watching if we if we've gone off the old into the dragon and picking apartment in favor of ours. Team America. Yeah, that would that was funny because it reminds me of the first time I watched it when because obviously we were talking about this in the previous episode about your love of puppets and you know, yeah, TV and there was a masterstroke is a is brilliant.

00:01  intro
You're listening to a mid
00:01
life less ordinary, the weekly
00:05
podcast giving you the lowdown
00:05
on becoming a cool older dude.
00:11
The good times are not afraid of
00:11
memory. It's time to start
00:15
loving them again. And here are
00:15
your hosts Wayne and tribe.
00:22  Wayne
Yeah, Hello again
00:22
everyone and welcome to a
00:24
midlife less ordinary. And
00:24
today's episode is entitled
00:28
Wayne and Trev'sExcellent
00:28
Adventure excellent.
00:32  Trev
Trev's here as always our
00:32
from the hip vocally.
00:37  Wayne
Now while you're firing
00:37
from the hip Trev Could you
00:40
maybe explain why we called it
00:40
that and maybe about the films
00:44
that we represent him with the
00:44
title?
00:47  Trev
Well, to be honest, again,
00:47
gain on this on nostalgia trip
00:50
of movies this time. I was
00:50
really looking forward to the
00:54
third bit intead coming out.
00:54
Yeah. Because I really like the
00:59
first one is GIS real good fun.
00:59
Goodness now. Oh, yeah. When
01:05
even when you watch it, I bought
01:05
it on 4k and watched it again.
01:08
And it stands up now. For like,
01:08
just a really good fun movie. I
01:16
felt like I was one of them back
01:16
in the day, because I was a bit
01:19
of that kind of airhead, dude.
01:19
Yeah, you can't help yourself
01:25
Kenya, it just and they had
01:25
their own way of speaking which
01:28
I think when you are a young
01:28
man, you and your mates and I
01:33
mean you have always had and
01:33
some of the other guys, I'm not
01:36
too bad boys have your own kind
01:36
of language. Yeah. You feel like
01:39
you're sort of that really,
01:39
really summed it up for me. It
01:43
was just, I think there's Well,
01:43
I think you'll you you'll agree
01:48
as well as we were quite
01:48
obsessed with American culture
01:52
worldwide. Yes. In your skull.
01:52
Yeah, it seems like a lot. The
01:55
whole kind of like the sort of
01:55
body warmers or is utilized. I
01:59
didn't call to visualize that
01:59
says he's just a body warm, or I
02:04
say Baxter future life
02:04
preserver. They were great. And
02:10
I think we were quite obsessed
02:10
with Nike, then. Yes, I don't
02:14
think I was really overly aware
02:14
of Nike as a mic until I saw the
02:21
white and red ones in Back to
02:21
the Future.
02:23  Wayne
Yes.
02:24  Trev
I'm sure. Because, yeah,
02:24
because we came from obviously,
02:29
more of a football background as
02:29
kids. Yeah. So it was it was
02:33
sort of Patrick's not what block
02:33
Butch Butch Wilkins, new
02:37
balance, wasn't it? Yeah, Bryan
02:37
Robson wasn't Yes, yes, that
02:42
Yeah. But that was the whole
02:42
thing it was. And then all of a
02:45
sudden, like, like, in these
02:45
American films, you were seeing
02:49
Nike trainers. I think that
02:49
introduced us. I remember one of
02:52
the guys we both know very well
02:52
from school. Had a pair of those
02:56  Wayne
mics. Yeah, I'm not
02:56
jealous at all.
02:59  Trev
No, not so but now going
02:59
back to bill and Ted did quite a
03:03
lot. The second one I must
03:03
admit, the second one's pretty
03:06
good. some really cool bands in
03:06
it. Primus was I was really
03:10
excited to privacy the movie and
03:10
not to mine five, nine Moore's
03:13
in it, which was really good.
03:13
But and the introduction of
03:18
death in it was great, wasn't
03:18
it? Yes. It's one of the best
03:21
lines in it like the man with no
03:21
tan. Excellent. But the third
03:26
one, I don't know how many of
03:26
our listeners have seen the
03:28
third one. I'd like to have
03:28
their thoughts on it. Have you
03:32
seen the third one? No, I
03:33  Wayne
haven't actually, I'm not
03:33
as big a fan as you are.
03:37  Trev
Probably the middle music.
03:37
Yes. It doesn't it with my you
03:41
know, any any reference to Iron
03:41
Maiden? I'll put them in the
03:44
Iron Maiden for the first one.
03:44
Loved it.
03:47  Wayne
So even from a nostalgia
03:47
perspective, the third one
03:50
didn't didn't didn't stimulate?
03:52  Trev
Not at all. No, I don't
03:52
think so. I think he's had a bit
03:55
of an easy cop out with movies.
03:55
Because the main characters are
04:00
older. They they bring their
04:00
siblings into it a bit like a
04:03
sort of creed. Yes. Rocky and
04:03
stuff. I think it's a bit of a
04:06
cop out. Really. It's like even
04:06
with creed. No creed was good.
04:12
Yeah, I enjoyed the first crude
04:12
movie. And it was obvious to go
04:17
that way, wasn't it? Yes. Yeah,
04:17
I read the whole drug. I was
04:20
sad. And now and I must have
04:20
been what I've read. What was
04:23
happening with it? I was like,
04:23
This is gonna be great. And it's
04:26
not great, but it's good. Yeah.
04:26
But yeah, I think that's a bit
04:28
of a cop out with the CDs,
04:28
passing of the torch, isn't it?
04:31
Yes. You know, you
04:33  Wayne
just don't think they're
04:33
gonna do a full novel way to get
04:35
six movies out of it.
04:36  Trev
So it's all franchise,
04:36
isn't it? Yeah, that's the
04:38
problem that that's that. I
04:38
think people that aren't really
04:41
particularly into movies. don't
04:41
really understand that. That
04:46
it's about getting three or four
04:46
films. Yeah. As as a as a
04:50
banker, money wise. That's what
04:50
they do. If you know they they
04:53
think about sequels before
04:53
they've even finished a script
04:56
of some of them. Exactly. But
04:56
yeah, you don't want to think
05:00
They're gonna bring their
05:00
siblings into a TV show or
05:03
something, you know that that's
05:03
that's what and then again that
05:06
was down the legacy of the
05:06
original. Yeah, if you were to
05:10
nine three films, nostalgic way
05:10
from sort of the 80s and 90s
05:16
What would they be your free
05:16
films with Chevy they say if you
05:19
say dirty dance
05:22  Wayne
I think if you're
05:22
speaking to any young lady you
05:24
know of a certain vintage that
05:24
that probably would be in their
05:27
top three I'm pretty woman and
05:27
ghosts maybe but you know from
05:32
1990 But no, I there are my four
05:32
five and six lists about
05:41  Trev
once a month and you put
05:41
those on
05:45  Wayne
we're not definitely
05:45
that's another big controversial
05:50
draft controversial and so yeah,
05:50
for top three I mean, if we're
05:54
not talking about the movies
05:54
that are there to evoke
05:57
nostalgia feeling like such as
05:57
ready play a go and then kind of
06:02
films we're actually talking 80s
06:02
and what sums it up for me
06:06  Trev
not the new ones that are
06:06
trying are trying to evoke those
06:09  Wayne
feelings. I would say for
06:09
me if we're going to take out
06:13
obviously away all the Star Wars
06:13
stuff.
06:15  Trev
Yeah, we're just
06:16  Wayne
gonna go that exists pure
06:16
nostalgia. I've got to say
06:18
probably ET I didn't I didn't
06:18
actually think of that one. But
06:23
that is a good call. It just
06:23
evokes that 80s feeling because
06:27
the book bx is in a such a big
06:27
movie at the time. I would also
06:32
say Back to the Future, funnily
06:32
enough
06:35  Trev
because I that was the
06:35
first one I thought of Yeah,
06:38
that one that's Yeah, that that
06:38
we can't beat it.
06:41  Wayne
You can watch it over and
06:41
over again. Great fine. Yeah,
06:43
still enjoy it as much.
06:45  Trev
The funny thing is I've
06:45
watched all three of those again
06:47
recently. Again, I think I was
06:47
mentioned in the last episode
06:51
about the kind of watching feel
06:51
good movies and that was one of
06:55
my sort of Coronavirus,
06:55
depression things and I always
07:02
thought the third one was the
07:02
weakest out of all of them watch
07:07
it again
07:08  Wayne
I've Yeah, it's not as
07:08
bad it's a good it was done back
07:10
to back with the second was
07:12  Trev
yes and you can see it
07:12
which is good. Yeah, the
07:13
continuity but to be honest, he
07:13
is a delight. Obviously I really
07:17
would like him Walker's easy
07:17
topper in it yeah love that
07:20
track though back Oh, he's a
07:20
really good song song. But he's
07:24
not that bad. Anybody clever?
07:24
Yeah, well,
07:26  Wayne
it's it's I enjoyed it
07:26
it's funny I watch that
07:29
Christmas day and I exactly what
07:29
you're just saying I enjoyed it
07:31
more I used to avoid watching
07:31
that one but actually I really
07:35
enjoyed it.
07:36  Trev
Yes, it's a really
07:36
enjoyable I don't know. I think
07:41
that's one of the things that
07:41
really is good for the battery
07:44
banks of the future is how
07:44
clever they are. The writing is
07:48
brilliant. Yes Really is it just
07:48
it's the how and and what I like
07:53
about it as well is we've a lot
07:53
of time traveling films is they
07:58
try to get so clever and so deep
07:58
that you actually lose track of
08:02
what's going on yes timeline
08:02
Back to the Future doesn't do
08:05
that in my opinion. it you know
08:05
exactly where you are. You know
08:09
exactly yeah, I think for a time
08:09
travel film is Purves top is
08:15
definitely there is others that
08:15
are really good. Don't get me
08:18
wrong, but yeah, anyway you tell
08:18
us Back to the Future I'd got
08:21
that
08:22  Wayne
I thought that one so I'm
08:22
glad we can agree on something.
08:24
So we know what we do when we
08:24
can actually all catch up we
08:27
watching if we if we've gone off
08:27
the old into the dragon and
08:31
picking apartment in favor of
08:31
ours. Team America. Yeah, that
08:35
would that was funny because it
08:35
reminds me of the first time I
08:37
watched it when because
08:37
obviously we were talking about
08:39
this in the previous episode
08:39
about your love of puppets and
08:44
you know, yeah, TV and there was
08:44
a masterstroke is a is
08:47
brilliant. I love I'm not as big
08:47
a fan as you. And I remember
08:51
coming out and you said, I've
08:51
got this team and Moravec and
08:52
it'll be good. And you put it
08:52
on. Oh my god. I've never
08:56
laughed so much in my life.
08:58  Trev
Yeah, it was stunning.
08:58
What they just did. But what an
09:02
ingenious idea.
09:03  Wayne
Yeah, exactly.
09:04  Trev
I think he I think he's
09:04
because it's stone and Parker. I
09:09
can't think of their names now.
09:09
Yeah. Trey Parker. That's it.
09:12
Yeah, but I think because
09:12
they're Canadian. Yes. works
09:17
more than anything. Yeah.
09:17
Because they're able to kind of
09:21
stand back from the American
09:21
Exactly. Are our flag waving and
09:26
but I think this world a bit
09:26
like Mike Myers was with Austin
09:30
Powers. I think they're so into
09:30
British culture. That they
09:36
probably did watch Thunderbirds
09:36
Yeah. And I know Mike Myers did
09:39
watch like carry on films and
09:39
stuff like that. Yeah. So that
09:43
that that's where it is. I think
09:43
they got that really they got it
09:46
bang on me and he roar did we
09:46
were watching that. Oh, this
09:50
time unbelievable. Watch it
09:50
again for a while I
09:53  Wayne
should watch that. This
09:53
is actually it was on day one of
09:57
the channels I was flicking
09:57
through and I was sitting there
09:58
with the nine year old Mystery
09:58
confront it is on and then a
10:02
part come up that I can't really
10:02
describe because even though we
10:05
class This podcast is explicit,
10:05
we try and avoid it if we can.
10:09
Yeah, the bits come up. And it
10:09
was something to do with Gary.
10:14
And I, and I was wanting to
10:14
watch it, but obviously I
10:16
couldn't watch it with a nine
10:16
year old sitting there. So
10:18  Trev
I think as well, it makes
10:18
Team America makes no apologies
10:23
to being so in your face with
10:23
the sort of sexism police
10:29
doesn't care. Sometimes it's
10:29
refreshing. Yeah, baby. He's
10:35
done very well. It's not just
10:35
because it's
10:37  Wayne
puppets as well. You
10:37
don't take it as a joke
10:39
straightaway, isn't it? Exactly.
10:41  Trev
Spot on. But yeah, so
10:45  Wayne
you said, I'm sorry. So
10:45
we got back to the future. And
10:49
if we're gonna pick another one,
10:49
and this one might be a slightly
10:52
curveball, but Top Gun takes me
10:52
right.
10:55  Trev
Yeah. Yeah, again, I
10:55
watched that the other day in 4k
10:59
cuz I'm on the 4k trip. And
10:59
yeah, he's, he's, he's really
11:04
good. You can't help but really
11:04
like it. But that's more of a
11:07
kind of young adults film is
11:07
yes. Yeah. Yeah. No, it's like,
11:13  Wayne
cuz we're 14 when that
11:13
come out when we so
11:15  Trev
yeah, so we will probably
11:15
I think we probably would enjoy
11:19
it more now.
11:22  Wayne
That's why I'm saying.
11:22
Yeah, to evoke memories of being
11:25
that age.
11:26  Trev
These are the movies I
11:26
watch. What do you think the new
11:28
one would be like?
11:31  Wayne
I think it'll be probably
11:31
pants and we'll probably cane
11:33
it. But I'll still watch. Can't
11:33
wait to watch it. Yeah,
11:37  Trev
Samia, y'all really want
11:37
to say God bless Tony Scott, by
11:39
the way. Yeah, yeah. Well, so
11:39
filmmaker true I made a lot of
11:43
movie. Yeah, yeah. Gary Oldman
11:43
are in there. He's just strikes
11:46
or just
11:47  Wayne
really brilliant film.
11:47
Yeah, True Romance. Is it? I
11:49
mean, that's early 90s, isn't
11:49
it?
11:51  Trev
Yeah, it's that's great. I
11:51
think that's probably the lie.
11:54
I've Tarantino wrote it, didn't
11:54
he? Yeah, he took it. He took
11:58
his name off it, didn't he?
11:58
That's right. Yeah, duh. Why?
12:05
Why there's one line in there
12:05
that just I think my love affair
12:10
with Gary Oldman was it's that
12:10
and Leon But anyway, again, get
12:16
back onto the subject that we
12:16
were supposed to be.
12:18  Wayne
So what do you worry
12:18
about your free obviously trip
12:20
for the for people to the
12:20
future?
12:23  Trev
Yeah, yeah, definitely. I
12:23
don't think about people
12:26
watching them. I would have
12:26
thought most people 99% people
12:29
have although we have a message
12:29
you say and some people haven't
12:33
seen Star Wars but it's still
12:33
fine. That'd be like a sort of
12:38
listening to a like a podcast in
12:38
Peru language. Well, I haven't
12:43
done actually speak Peruvian,
12:43
but I did enjoy. Ghostbusters.
12:49
Yes. Well, yeah. Bill Murray.
12:49
I'm strange enough of Groundhog
12:55
Day on on the moment with the
12:55
sound down. Which is good. But
12:59
yeah, but Ghostbusters show?
12:59
Yeah, what a different movie
13:02
Ghostbusters could have been.
13:02
Yes. If anybody's seen that
13:05
documentary that's rockin about
13:05
Ghostbusters. It's great.
13:09  Wayne
I thought another one as
13:09
well as a new one coming out of
13:11
that trip. Are you looking
13:11
forward to Yeah,
13:13  Trev
I am. Because Paul runs
13:13
it. It will all fall man crush
13:17
on Paul. I just love the guy. I
13:17
don't know why. Just because you
13:22
can see it. Yeah. Yeah, he's
13:22
just a guy. You'd never let you
13:26
down. And you know, he's a
13:26
massive rush fan, which is
13:30
great. But yeah, I'm looking for
13:30
that because of that. But the
13:37
Ghostbusters movie who hasn't
13:37
seen that documentary could have
13:40
been so different because they
13:40
actually it wasn't gonna be Bill
13:43
Murray. In that movie. It was
13:43
actually going to the three
13:48
there's only gonna be three of
13:48
them. And it was gonna be Dan
13:50
Aykroyd, john Belushi and Eddie
13:50
Murphy. JOHN Belushi. Yes.
13:56
Imagine what a movie that would
13:56
have been. too big. My pants are
14:00
filling up just thinking now.
14:00
Massive job I love john Belushi
14:05
and I love Eddie Murphy. So what
14:05
a film that would have been but
14:09
then Bill Murray is great, isn't
14:09
he?
14:12  Wayne
Yes. No. You can't
14:12
imagine anyone else's venkman
14:15
No,
14:15  Trev
no you can't the walk by
14:15
the found in. Yeah, good dry
14:19
sense of humor. Yeah, yeah,
14:19
exactly. And I think that made
14:23
me really like Bill marks of a
14:23
Big Bill Murray fan as well.
14:27  Wayne
You what you like stripes
14:27
before that.
14:28  Trev
Stripes. Stripes is great.
14:28
Apart from the end, isn't it?
14:31
Yeah. The stripes. He's really
14:31
good. I thought what about Bob?
14:38
But she Caddyshack Mary. Mary
14:38
runs show. Yeah, everything. I
14:44
just like a lot of the all of
14:44
your stuff. And the other film I
14:47
think was Gremlins. Yes. This
14:47
was huge. Just algae wise.
14:54  Wayne
It created a lot of
14:54
controversy didn't it at the
14:56
time because they said it was
14:56
scary like a horrific
14:59  Trev
war. Which, which I think
14:59
is good. It was like a kind of a
15:02
genre crossing film because
15:02
yeah, as you say, it was quite
15:05
scary and quite violent in
15:05
place. Yeah. But it just seemed
15:09
to work so well. And it's a
15:09
shame that God only has a major
15:13
recapture that I watch Small
15:13
Soldiers again. That's okay.
15:17
That's right. Yeah. But I'll
15:17
tell you what he if anybody can
15:22
take out the the original
15:22
Twilight Zone movie, and there's
15:25
some great stuff really
15:25
brilliant. That knows. And the
15:29
funny the weird thing about the
15:29
Twilight Zone movie is the
15:33
weakest story out of the four is
15:33
Steven Spielberg's one gets
15:37
that. And talking to Spielberg,
15:37
that's another one. jaws. jaws.
15:42
Yeah. Close Encounters.
15:44  Wayne
Close Encounters. Yeah.
15:45  Trev
Those two. Yeah, jaws
15:45
again jaws?
15:49  Wayne
Because we probably
15:49
shouldn't have seen it. No. And
15:51
it was scary when I first
15:51
watched it. Yeah. Huh. The hell
15:55
out of the boat. Yeah, the
15:55
camerawork of that that was
15:58
fantastic was on the beach. And
15:58
you don't see this as a great
16:03
lesson. Yeah. In how to make a
16:03
movie where you don't see the
16:05
monster for for ages and be able
16:05
to suspense the music, john
16:09
Williams. Fantastic all come
16:09
together just
16:13  Trev
the I can name a few sort
16:13
of other movies that I really
16:18
hold fondly from that. That era
16:18
of some reason. You remember
16:24
when we were talking about TV
16:24
shows loss on Jimmy Kimmel or
16:26
blue Thunder? That's all Yeah,
16:26
bit like that was good.
16:29  Wayne
Roy Snyder again. Yeah,
16:29
for sure. I'd
16:31  Trev
have yet French
16:31
Connection. Or for some reason
16:35
as well, it probably wasn't
16:35
aimed at me, but I don't know
16:37
why I like this movie of
16:37
Firefox. I really like that. Oh,
16:40
Clint Eastwood. Yeah, I
16:42  Wayne
don't know why he's not a
16:42
kid is a spy thriller in it.
16:45
Yeah.
16:45  Trev
Yeah. But this idea of
16:45
someone nicking a jet and him
16:48
being stuffy. Just kind of.
16:51  Wayne
He's always been
16:51
activities. We know he's still
16:54
making movies.
16:55  Trev
Yeah, still playing golf.
16:55
Strangely enough, which is like,
16:59
the last Starfire as a kid film.
17:01  Unknown
Yes.
17:02  Trev
I think one of the reasons
17:02
I think that's so good. Is who
17:06
didn't want to be abducted by
17:06
aliens? Because you are good at
17:09
video games. Exactly. Yeah. All
17:09
talking of which you haven't
17:12
mentioned when I'm surprised
17:12
with Jeff Bridges. You haven't
17:16
mentioned Tron? No Tron? Yes. I
17:16
love it. Either bedspread and
17:21
everything. I tried to rebel
17:21
against my star wars and as when
17:24
I was because everybody loved
17:24
it. And I was like, No, I can't
17:29
have this. I've got to find
17:29
something else. And I just went
17:31
mad for Tron. And the black
17:31
hole. I know you love the black
17:36
hole. Yeah. Yeah, it was a
17:36
strange film, wasn't it? Because
17:39
it was Disney film. Yeah. Leave
17:39
a kid's film. But he's quite
17:44
serious. Like Star Trek filter
17:44
it hasn't it? Yes. Yeah. And
17:49
Andy Perkins is in it.
17:50  Wayne
Yes. Sorry.
17:52  Trev
Yes, bald nine. Another
17:52
one. Yeah. But it's a little bit
17:56
like a bee got these cutesy
17:56
little robots? Babatunde I can't
18:00
think of the other ones called
18:00
Old Bob. trends of instant
18:03
instant. Yes. And that's it.
18:03
Everybody went down was a voice.
18:06
Yes. Right there. That really
18:06
bizarre, but it was quite
18:10
serious as well. If you're
18:10
trying to get on the Star Wars
18:13
thing, Disney. They missed it
18:13
completely. But
18:15  Wayne
they may or they may take
18:15
equally Yeah. Not equally as
18:18
good. But I mean, it has its own
18:18
field. But for Disney. I
18:21
wouldn't believe it.
18:22  Trev
No, because I actually had
18:22
a few of the figures from the
18:25
black toys. Yeah, we still got
18:25
them. No, no, that'd be worth
18:29
it. I've got one of the Tron
18:29
ones. One of the real problems
18:32
in a packet. But a blister pack.
18:32
Should I say for collectors with
18:40
who would want as a kid collect
18:40
light figures from the black
18:46
hole because they were just
18:46
like, some welders. Yeah, but
18:50
what was the ship called?
18:52  Wayne
Are the new I'm thinking
18:52
of alien and everything else.
18:58
Yeah, extend. Palomino,
18:58
Palomino. Yes,
19:01  Trev
yes, well, just a hoax,
19:01
wasn't it? Yes,
19:03  Wayne
it's a white horse, isn't
19:03
it? Is it right in and tell us
19:06
if we're wrong? It's not
19:06
important to the plot here. You
19:09  Trev
know, the one that
19:09
everybody really holds close to
19:13
their heart as I understand you
19:13
feel but I'm not the biggest fan
19:16
I like it. But I'm not mad on
19:16
it. Namely, man. Oh,
19:21  Wayne
we talked about it but I
19:21
suppose occasion.
19:23  Trev
Yeah, I think so. Go No,
19:23
it's
19:25  Wayne
not. It's not gonna be
19:25
rocky like Rocky.
19:27  Trev
No, no, no. Yeah, but
19:27
it's, it's it is a kid's film
19:32
with kids in it. They have given
19:32
it away there. Oh, Goonies?
19:35
Yeah, The Goonies always good,
19:35
but people just love it and
19:39
like, Yeah, really do. What do
19:39
you want?
19:41  Wayne
I like I like it. Yeah,
19:41
but it's not a more of a Raiders
19:45
of Lost Ark adventure. Maybe.
19:48  Trev
See what it was with us as
19:48
kids. We wanted to grow up and
19:52
be matched. Oh, yes. That's the
19:52
one that's why I don't really
19:55
get the whole Harry Potter
19:55
thing. Yeah. When I was a kid, I
19:59
was The Indiana Jones or wanting
19:59
to be the dude out Clash of the
20:03
Titans or like Tron? I wouldn't
20:03
want to be a speculative wizard
20:08
when I'm
20:12  Wayne
sorry any specie little
20:12
wizards out there.
20:14  Trev
Yeah, we lightning that
20:14
was the thing I think it was
20:20
more match I wasn't it then it
20:20
was Yes. Black Boys Boys were
20:25
the match to be a man. Yeah,
20:25
yeah, yeah. Now it's like they
20:29
want to but I don't know but
20:29
yeah, that that was you don't go
20:33
there No.
20:35  Wayne
But you're right i think
20:35
sorry to
20:37  Trev
the other films that would
20:37
really even flow into me as a
20:43
teenager. Rambo would have been
20:43
one of them as well guess what?
20:48
I sold in sorcery style was
20:48
Conan and Highlander.
20:53
Highlander. Yeah,
20:54  Wayne
we watched that school. I
20:54
don't know. Yeah, we watch that
20:57
school. I was watching a lot of
20:57
assembly room in the second
20:59
years senior. Or we'd gone now.
20:59
No, it was great. But I just
21:04
don't know why we was watching
21:04
it.
21:06  Trev
We're talking of sword and
21:06
sorcery for films and stuff,
21:09
because it was low.
21:12  Wayne
Here. One we found Arnie
21:12
in it and roadside officer.
21:18
Yeah, and we use it. Yeah,
21:18
that's right. That's what's the
21:20
name Brigitte Nielsen.
21:22  Trev
What's the one with the
21:22
rocker hair in it?
21:27  Unknown
crow? Oh, no. You said
21:27
crow.
21:29
Oh, something the juggler isn't
21:31  Wayne
a comment. But yeah,
21:33  Trev
I can't remember that one
21:33
is?
21:34  Unknown
Yeah. Blade Runner. We
21:34
haven't.
21:37  Trev
We haven't mentioned light
21:37
runner. Yeah, obviously some of
21:39
these films. We shouldn't have
21:39
been old enough to watch. No,
21:44
but because of the nostalgic
21:44
pirate videos
21:48  Wayne
Remember that? You had a
21:48
video recorded before me you
21:52
your middle seriously middle
21:52
class for a socialist trip.
21:58  Trev
I don't know how good I've
21:58
got it. I didn't try to pretend
22:03
to heaven.
22:04  Wayne
But I suppose another one
22:04
from next. I don't know if you I
22:07
don't want to go into tonight
22:07
what we've been up to at school
22:09
we at that time, but it is in a
22:09
second third year seniors
22:15
school. We just got youth club.
22:15
And they showed American
22:19
Werewolf in London. Now that is
22:19
a that felt like it was mine was
22:22
too scary to be showing the 12
22:22
years.
22:24  Trev
It's too good to be
22:24
honest. American Wharf in London
22:27
still scares me now.
22:28  Wayne
Yeah,
22:29  Trev
there's two there's two
22:29
films that I've mentioned this
22:32
before. In any of our episodes,
22:32
there's two films that my
22:35
brother might be watch when I
22:35
was really young. And they still
22:39
freaked me out. Now. One of them
22:39
is American Wharf in London.
22:42
About Love It features Britain
22:42
amazing. One of the first kind
22:46
of horror Sonic comedies just
22:46
brilliant. And the other one is
22:51
a shining, which just Yeah, I
22:51
love it. Brilliant. Robbie.
22:56
Going back to the sword and
22:56
sorcery thing. Why do you think
23:01
most of the universe didn't
23:01
work?
23:04  Wayne
Oh, I don't think it was
23:04
the right time for it. But then
23:07
that was when it was popular. So
23:07
you wouldn't better leave it
23:09
until computer graphics go up.
23:09
It was a bit camp. I don't Yeah,
23:15
I
23:15  Trev
just didn't work. It
23:15
wasn't big enough. For one. I
23:17
don't know. I've got a really
23:17
funny story about it. Because I
23:20
saw that the cinema and I must
23:20
have been 16 and I took a girl
23:27
from college there. And we went
23:27
and took her nephew. Yeah. And
23:35
this was in the days as well
23:35
that you were you could buy some
23:38
toys in the toy. And they had a
23:38
lot of plastic swords. He made
23:43
them I don't like trying to be
23:43
the good boyfriend and trying to
23:46
you know get in the right side
23:46
of her. I bought her her Nestle
23:52
one of these plastic so you
23:52
bought her a sword. I was gonna
23:56
I was thinking about your
23:56
romantic so yes. I tell you
24:00
what, what, it was the worst
24:00
mistake ever. Because he just
24:04
wasn't interested in the
24:04
universe. And all he wanted to
24:07
do was bash me with this with
24:07
the whole film. Honestly, and
24:12
and you know, remember, do you
24:12
remember when you your old
24:14
lightsaber Jimmy was having a
24:14
toy lightsaber and they were
24:17
brilliant one night? Yeah. Still
24:17
got rid of you. Really? The
24:22
handle was red, wasn't it? Yes.
24:22
Some of them my mom. Yes. But do
24:25
you remember if you hit sank too
24:25
hard. It would just bend the
24:28
plastic. Yes. or hit me so much
24:28
with this sword. That kind of
24:34
well, just about me and bashed
24:34
me but I can't put my finger on
24:39
it. I don't know. I saw I
24:39
watched a documentary about
24:41
that. I watch loads of
24:41
documentaries about movies. And
24:45
those really looked back on it
24:45
really fondly. Yeah. And and
24:50
Franklin jela took the part
24:50
really seriously for skeletal
24:54
and he can't and he they seem to
24:54
think the only reason it wasn't
24:57
a success was because they
24:57
pulled the bug on it. Yes. Yeah.
25:01
Looks like budget. Yeah. Yeah.
25:01
It was a cannon was it feel my
25:05
role? Yes, I budget. And they
25:05
couldn't make it the epic that
25:10
he wanted to be, but go back and
25:10
revisit it. Cuz a lot of fun
25:15
really is honestly man,
25:16  Wayne
I'll put I'll give that
25:16
another chance by talking about
25:20
you being here. I'm going to hit
25:20
you with test drive now.
25:22
Oh yeah, so I've got four
25:22
questions for your trip and this
25:30
week's test drive. They're not,
25:30
they're not going to teach you
25:33
too much. And hopefully you'll
25:33
get them play along at home
25:36
because I'm sure most of you
25:36
will have seen these movies.
25:39
Hopefully it will just use
25:41  Trev
well to maybe write bring.
25:41
send us questions in to do this.
25:45
Yeah, that'd be good. I know
25:45
some of you guys will probably
25:48
be so overly geeky and just like
25:48
put me aside. But you're welcome
25:54
to it if anybody really wants
25:54
to. Yeah, you
25:56  Wayne
have you can test trip
25:56
yourself.
25:58  Trev
Yeah, yeah. Bang, bang,
25:58
I'm on the site. Whatever.
26:02
easiest ones.
26:05  Wayne
So number one trip? Yep.
26:05
Which 80s movie was the highest
26:09
grossing film of the decade?
26:16  Trev
80s.
26:19  Wayne
So I'll give you a Not a
26:19
clue as such but just a little
26:23
hint. It's it's a past Star Wars
26:23
so it's not Star Wars.
26:29  Trev
Now genocide. You know.
26:37  Wayne
We've been mentioned it
26:37
was in no one said that. But it
26:40
has been mentioned already.
26:44  Trev
I'm good. It's all Back to
26:44
the Future.
26:53  Wayne
Before that, really?
26:53
Before earlier in the 80s 80
26:58
Yes. And it's a past Star Wars
26:58
to be the highest grossing film
27:07
of all time and it held that
27:07
record until Jurassic Park.
27:12  Trev
video game didn't know did
27:12
it the Atari
27:15  Wayne
they buried it or did you
27:15
see that? Oh, you showed it?
27:18
Yeah, that was brilliant. Yeah,
27:18
they landfilled it. Oh actually
27:21
completed it. So I don't know
27:21
what I said I had
27:23  Unknown
no relevance
27:24  Wayne
until now. It didn't it
27:24
had the music digitized version.
27:29  Trev
The other film we haven't
27:29
we get your questions. Flash
27:32
Gordon. Yes. Question number
27:32
two.
27:38  Wayne
See if you can guess this
27:38
99 you'll definitely get this
27:42
this 1980s movie with the
27:42
following quote. I am serious.
27:46
And don't call me Shirley.
27:49  Trev
What a movie that is.
27:49
Yeah, that's great. airplane.
27:53
Yes.
27:54  Wayne
It's Dr. Leslie Nielsen.
27:59  Trev
One of the best lines in
27:59
airplane. I think, is what he
28:03
says too. We've got a first one
28:03
guy we've got to get him to a
28:07
hospital or get her to a
28:07
hospital. And the guy goes to
28:10
what what is he goes to it's a
28:10
big build we have people that
28:14
kind of Zucker brothers are
28:14
brilliant for
28:19  Wayne
a movie you're not
28:19
special effects and things like
28:20
that grossed $83 million and was
28:20
nominated for a Golden Globe
28:25  Trev
it's so risky and it was
28:25
yeah
28:28  Wayne
it's still funny today
28:28
again revisit if you haven't
28:30
seen it, very funny. So
28:32  Trev
funny man question free.
28:34  Wayne
Which 1980s you know,
28:34
which 1980s theme song was
28:39
entirely instrumental and
28:39
reached number one in multiple
28:42
countries due to the due to a
28:42
remix tutor remix although it
28:48
seems obvious but to be and I'm
28:48
gonna start I'm gonna give you a
28:53
clue because actually been a
28:53
it's a very broad question
28:56
actually. Eddie Murphy theme
28:56
song two entirely instrumental
29:05
Eddie Murphy number one oh
29:17
excuse my singing number free on
29:17
the good news he were very funny
29:22
movie as he made his prime
29:22
proper prime Yeah. It was also
29:25
went to number one in multiple
29:25
countries. When Crazy Frog done
29:29
a version of his
29:32  Trev
I actually had actual held
29:32
fault Am I wasn't it? Yeah, I
29:38
had a 12 inch single. And the
29:38
cover looks so 80s because they
29:42
just put Eddie Murphy's picture
29:42
of him seated on his car, the
29:46
front you know, yes, I
29:47  Wayne
know that when you may
29:49  Trev
remember the 80s kind of
29:49
wallpaper splatter paint. Yes.
29:52
Look, it had that in a neon
29:52
blue.
29:56  Wayne
What have I remember that
29:56
was that right there? Question
30:00
for Trevon foot. Last but not
30:00
least, which 80s movie I'd be
30:05
very surprised if we don't do
30:05
this. Which 80s movie was Alan
30:08
Rickman first filter feature
30:08
film roll.
30:12  Unknown
I heard
30:15  Wayne
Hans Gruber Yeah, that
30:15
was until then he was a
30:18
Shakespearean actor and TV.
30:18
That's right. Yeah. He did not
30:22
get paid anything for doing it
30:22
to be nice.
30:24  Trev
You can't imagine he made
30:24
the film to me.
30:28  Unknown
I really liked
30:29  Trev
Yeah, top man.
30:30  Wayne
I watched funny enough I
30:30
watched on the strength of him
30:34
because I liked revisiting this
30:34
man was Truly Madly Deeply which
30:37
is one of these is a very good
30:37
film very of its time. But if
30:42
you like Alan Rickman, and you
30:42
liked him in the Harry Potter
30:44
movies even you know it's worth
30:44
watching great actor, Mr.
30:49  Unknown
Documentaries is that
30:50  Wayne
all our questions? That
30:50
is you've done I'm gonna give
30:53
you the four out of four for
30:53
that trip. Yeah, I
30:54  Trev
think so. You
30:55  Wayne
think you've done well?
30:55
Well done yeah,
30:56  Trev
I think I did think
30:56
favorite Elvis talking of
31:02
documentaries. Have you seen the
31:02
same Jones documentary? The
31:05
Flash one? No. Great. Brilliant.
31:05
Watch it man. The guy is so into
31:12
it still when everything some
31:12
guy actually actually got you
31:16
know, the Peter Duncan. Yes, me
31:16
for this. Yes. You know it, that
31:23
he's actually got the mechanism
31:23
that stings him. Yeah. How cool
31:30
is that? It just it's just all
31:30
photos. This takes it's a new
31:33
documentary. It's all it's
31:33
actually on the the new release
31:38
of flash golden. They did. Okay.
31:38
Did you know I'm gonna be really
31:42
controversial here. I've already
31:42
been controversial about
31:46
Goonies, but they're talking
31:46
about putting a warning on my on
31:51
flash golden. Before.
31:53  Unknown
Did you know this
31:53
forgotten? Oh, yes. Because it
31:56
says racial stereotype
31:58  Trev
stereotyping. Yeah, and
31:58
really I know obviously, but his
32:02
babies mean so there is. But
32:02
I've never even so about him
32:07
being oriental. No. until I've
32:07
heard this and I have stupid Am
32:12
I so they're gonna pull Ghandi
32:12
on a
32:16  Wayne
thing, Kingsley's not
32:16
oriental as far as I know.
32:20  Trev
No, you're right. I never
32:20
did was talk. And one of the
32:23
reasons as well is because he
32:23
weighs red and yellow in it a
32:27
lot. And that symbolizes the
32:27
Chinese flag Odia clutching at
32:33
straws, yeah, lads, I think, do
32:33
get a little bit of it. But
32:38
really, it's mean it's a kid's
32:38
face of ours. Yeah, yeah. Here.
32:43
So I tried to develop a really
32:43
funny picture post on my
32:47
Instagram about that about Megan
32:47
voles.
32:52  Wayne
ref, check him out. Check
32:52
it out if you have Instagram.
32:56  Trev
That's a really good film
32:56
as well, isn't it? Yes. The
32:59
thing with Highlander and flash
32:59
was the music as well. I
33:02  Wayne
think we've recreated
33:02
soundtrack Yeah,
33:04  Trev
yeah, again, that that
33:04
really would pull you in. But
33:09
the thing is, we have a lot of
33:09
these films like with the
33:11
success of Star Wars, they all
33:11
there are so many other movies
33:15
that tried to be talked about in
33:15
a black hole. But there was like
33:17
Battlestar Galactica wasn't
33:17
there? Yes. They tried to jump
33:20
on it. That was a good TV show,
33:20
wasn't it? Yeah. The funniest
33:24
one out of them. And you
33:24
wouldn't think it would be would
33:26
work at all, but I think it
33:26
does. And it's quite a funny
33:29
movie. Was battle beyond the
33:29
stars. Yes. Yeah. Which was like
33:33
The Magnificent Seven done in
33:33
space. It was Yes, Jules pap
33:38
parties like driving like an
33:38
actual kind of camper van
33:42
spaceship. It's actually looks
33:42
like a camper van. And like,
33:47
yeah, there's a really bizarre
33:47
film that they've got the kid at
33:50
the woodlands was in it. JOHN
33:50
boy, if anybody's seen it, john
33:54
boy. Yeah, if anybody's seen it,
33:54
again, leave a message and say
33:57
what they thought of it. But
33:57
when I was a kid watching that,
34:00
there's a Valkyrie character in
34:00
it a like a female warrior. And
34:06
she lays down to fly a ship,
34:06
which is like a really bizarre
34:09
position. Not since Boba Fett
34:09
stood up and flew slave one. I
34:14
looked like he was flying slave
34:14
one standing up, but, and she
34:18
just got a lot of press hanging
34:18
out in it.
34:21  Wayne
That's definitely of his
34:21
time.
34:23  Unknown
Yes, exactly. She's
34:23
just got her breasts hanging out
34:26
just to sell a few more tickets.
34:28  Wayne
Yeah.
34:28  Trev
Unbelievable. Can you
34:28
imagine if you were like a dead
34:31
taking your kid to say that?
34:31
Anyone are bloody or can't stand
34:34
Soho? I have. Oh my god. All of
34:34
a sudden, it's
34:37  Wayne
my favorite genre. Yes.
34:41  Trev
Yes, definitely. Okay,
34:41
Sammy, you're really getting
34:45
that bit back on again. It was
34:45
just really I remember sitting
34:48
there when you're like 11 and
34:48
you're you're growing he's grown
34:52
into
34:54  Wayne
there's a bit of a reason
34:54
you've watched a bit. First
34:57
police academy for the same kind
34:57
of reasons. Really. Yes, yes.
35:01
Are glimpses of
35:03  Trev
Yeah. Good films as well
35:03
what they,
35:06  Wayne
they Yeah, they did six
35:06
equals when it is
35:09  Unknown
yeah and
35:11  Wayne
i they missed the Steve
35:11
Guttenberg and yeah, no, they're
35:15
great movies based on real
35:15
police cadets have two movies
35:19
with Steve gombert in the gumbo
35:19
that police academy and Freeman
35:23
and the baby
35:24  Unknown
are really up to pick
35:24
that auto pick cocoon.
35:29  Wayne
cocoon. Yes, Christ. No,
35:29
that's good. stouter.
35:33  Trev
Yeah, cocoon was one of
35:33
those movies that look the two
35:37
of them and then yeah Spielberg
35:37
in directing did he
35:39  Wayne
did he was involved in in
35:39
production was amazing, because
35:42  Trev
he's one of those films
35:42
that looks like the most
35:45
Spielberg film ever, but wasn't
35:45
directed by him.
35:48  Wayne
Yes, it does. Yeah. He's
35:48
fingerprints on it somewhere.
35:53
He's
35:53  Trev
got that light glow of
35:53
Close Encounters on it and
35:56
everything you should keep
35:56
moving is he's gonna check that
35:59
he's
35:59  Wayne
not seen it. So that sort
35:59
of brings us up to the
36:03
conclusion trip. So yeah,
36:03
nostalgia. I
36:09  Trev
think we've covered a lot
36:09
of 80s nostalgia there from
36:12
revisit some of them films if
36:12
you've not seen some of the if
36:14
we've forgotten any, any of them
36:14
that really should have stood
36:17
out and we forget to mention
36:17
them messages and tell us
36:20
because everyone's got their
36:20
favorites from these eras.
36:25  Wayne
Yeah, please. You can
36:25
pick from please visit the
36:28
website. I am l o podcast.com.
36:28
And also on a trip I actually I
36:33
saw your charity, prostate
36:33
charity race. You've exceeded
36:38
your target, I believe 1000
36:40  Trev
pounds. Yeah, well does.
36:40
Danny, whoever if anybody's
36:44
donated the listeners. Thank you
36:44
very much. I've only got a few
36:47
miles to go. But that yes.
36:47
Incredible. I'd never dreamed
36:52
that I'd get over 1000 pound.
36:52
I'd like to thank very quickly
36:57
the guys from the big village
36:57
Essex to put a Huge donation in
37:00
His Word wasn't the whole 1000
37:00
pound they really really kind of
37:03
was great. Yeah, amazing. I'm
37:03
actually if I can get to 1002 50
37:08
I'm gonna do something really
37:08
stupid. That'd be worth
37:12
watching.
37:13  Wayne
It sounds ominous to do
37:13
it. Yes. Yep. All the minerals
37:17
to do I'll keep contributing
37:17
everyone by the side of it.
37:20
Yeah, exactly. Yes. If you want
37:20
me to look like an absolute ass
37:23
then I'm looking forward to this
37:23
now I'm looking in my bank
37:26
account. But now if you can help
37:26
drive out is a great cause is
37:32
the cause that we want to
37:32
support on this podcast. It is
37:35
our is our age group we've ever
37:35
it touches us not literally but
37:38
personally as well doesn't even
37:38
know yet of course so if you can
37:42
please help out. So yeah, there
37:42
you go. There's some films to
37:46
check out there anything else
37:46
you want to say to everyone
37:49
Trevor garden in nostalgic
37:49
films?
37:53  Trev
It's a wrap Really? No,
37:53
we've mentioned loads aside
37:57
watching Groundhog Day still
37:57
now. And it's a really good one
38:01
people love that. Yeah, there's
38:01
a room for that. And again, if
38:06
we said it on the last episode
38:06
about TV nostalgia, and if
38:11
they're gonna do it, do it
38:11
right. Let's hope the Top Gun
38:14
and the Ghostbusters film is
38:14
done right.
38:16  Unknown
Yes.
38:17  Trev
It the indications there.
38:17
You know,
38:21  Wayne
we'll enjoy it. At least
38:21
it's something to look forward
38:24
to. Isn't it this nostalgic make
38:24
sure it gets you gives you that
38:26
feeling? Hopefully there's some
38:26
Kenny Loggins music not in
38:28
Ghostbusters. Or you must read
38:32  Trev
if Kenny Loggins come out
38:32
every time and did one last
38:36
tune? Yeah. For Top Gun to that
38:36
would be great. Yeah, I still
38:42
don't care. I love Danger Zone.
38:42
Danger Zone is great. Yes.
38:46
Because of the archer
38:46
connection, which I love as
38:48
well, but I still think he's
38:48
best shooter is the Caddyshack
38:51
one. Yeah. Not being funny. How
38:51
can you not love a dancing
38:56
gopher? How could you not love
38:56
that? Just that was a
39:00
celebration. I wanted. I wanted
39:00
a footballer to do that. Yes. to
39:04
score because we used to do it
39:04
when I used to play Sunday
39:07
football. We used to do that.
39:07
And you just bought a
39:11
professional to do it in front
39:11
of everybody go I know what that
39:14
is. They're not gonna do
39:14
footballers honors callers
39:17
anymore. They
39:18  Wayne
know. They're robots, but
39:18
that's a definitely for another
39:21
topic. Yeah, definitely. Yeah.
39:21
Thanks for joining us, everyone
39:24
on this one.
39:26  Trev
Again, taking us back to
39:26
our our kind of youth again.
39:31  Wayne
Yeah. Okay. Oh, those
39:31
were the days. Yeah. Thanks for
39:35
joining us on this journey. If
39:35
you can leave us a review.
39:38
That'll be great. And we'll see
39:38
you on the next one. Until then.
39:41
Bye. Bye.
