Politics: Meet Me in the Middle

In an age when saying the wrong thing in a Twitter post could leave you ghosted by onetime friends—or worse—we find our country torn apart at the political seams. But things don’t need to be this way. Constructive social discourse is not dead, it just needs a little resuscitation. From CurtCo Media. Consider Meet Me in the Middle your political rehab. Each week, Ed Larson (Pulitzer Prize winning historian, author, and world-wide lecturer) invites guests from across the ideological spectrum—including politicians, activists, and celebrities—to sit down, discuss the issues, and if not find consensus, at least find common ground. So bring an open mind and remember, we’re more alike than different.

episode 57: 57 - One Step Closer: A Deep Look at Universal Basic Income with Professor Ioana Elena Marinescu (Part One)

[transcript]

What are the pros and cons for Universal Basic Income, the Andrew Yang Plan, and ending poverty in the United States once and for all? Ioana Elena Marinescu, assistant professor of public policy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice, joins Bill Curtis and Jane Albrecht in Part 1 of 2 of an in-depth discussion on these topics and more.

Universal Basic Income (UBI) is a periodic cash payment unconditionally delivered to all on an individual basis, without any work requirement. A growing number of people believe that UBI could be a viable and powerful strategy for addressing many of the U.S.' current issues including poverty, social mobility, economic inequality, and labor market instability. Individuals across the political spectrum, whether Libertarians, Progressives, Conservatives, and Liberals are finding strong reasons to support UBI. The growing popularity of implementing UBI has led to a resurgence of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Poor People’s Campaign, of which UBI was a cornerstone, leading thousands to protest in the streets.  For profit, non-profits, as well as local to federal governments in the U.S. and around the world are planning on and conducting large-scale trials of the system. Many politicians are starting to promote UBI on their platforms.
