Environmental Toxins Are Making You Fat, Sick, and Inflamed (Minisode #31)

It’s no secret that the environment we live in today is having a negative effect on our health. Eighty thousand toxic chemicals have been released into our environment since the dawn of the industrial revolution, yet very few have been tested for their long-term impact on human health.

From the polluted air we breathe, to the food additives we consume, untested skin products that we lather on, and vast chemical soups that bombard us daily, most people agree that our environment is making us sick.

In this mini-episode, Dhru speaks with Dr. Aly Cohen and Carey Gillam about the effects of environmental toxins on the brain and other organ systems; the health hazards of glyphosate, one of the most widely used herbicides; and practical strategies for keeping toxins out of our homes.

Dr. Aly Cohen is a rheumatologist, integrative medicine specialist, and environmental health expert. She is also the author of Integrative Environmental Medicine, and Non-Toxic: A Guide to Living Healthy in a Chemical World.

Carey Gillam is a veteran investigative journalist with more than 25 years of experience. She currently works as a Research Director for the non-profit US Right to Know, and as a columnist for The Guardian. She is the author of Whitewash: The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer and the Corruption of Science, and her recently published book, The Monsanto Papers: Deadly Secrets, Corporate Corruption, and One Man’s Search for Justice.
