The World’s Most Amazing Navigators, Plus: the Wonders of Islamic Spain

Everything-Everywhere’s Gary Arndt joins Paul and Elizabeth to celebrate the ancient Polynesian navigators who sailed much of the Pacific Ocean, using only traditional techniques. They navigated by the stars, the waves, the currents, and the clouds with amazing accuracy. In double-hulled voyaging canoes they sailed from what is now French Polynesia to the Hawaiian Islands, and Rapa Nui (Easter Island). In the 1970s, the Polynesian Voyaging Society (hokulea.com) began studying and reviving those ancient techniques, building open ocean voyaging canoes like the traditional ones. One of those, Hokule‘a, sailed from Hawai‘i to French Polynesia in 1976, and from French Polynesia to Rapa Nui in 1999. On both voyages, the crew used only the traditional navigational techniques, proving that those ancient voyages were possible. Gary also reveals the enormous cultural heritage the Moors brought to Spain and takes us to a place in Greece that allows no women.
