Ep.121 – Tornado with John Nichol

Tim is joined by John Nichol. During 15 years’ service in the Royal Air Force John Nichol flew Tornadoes in both the Air Defence and Ground Attack roles. On active duty during the first Gulf War in 1991 he was shot down on the first low-level, daylight raid of the conflict.

Captured and tortured, he was paraded on television provoking worldwide condemnation and leaving one of the enduring images of that war. He returned to active duty and was involved in policing the exclusion zone as part of the UN force maintaining the fragile peace in Bosnia.

He has served around the world from the Nevada Desert to the Middle East and Norway to the Falkland Islands and he joins us to talk about his latest book .

This is the astonishing story of the RAF’s Tornado force, and their loved ones, at the very heart of Operation Desert Storm and the liberation of Kuwait in 1991.

It is a story of untold fear and suffering, and astounding courage in the face of hitherto unimaginable adversity. It is the story those who did not return, and of the families who watched and waited as one of the most complex conflicts in recent history unfolded live on television.
