Squanderlust with Martha Lawton

A light-hearted exploration of the emotional side of money. Many of us have good intentions about getting on top of our financial admin, budgeting better, and saving more, and in theory it sounds so easy. But then real life gets in the way, we're tired or frustrated or busy and somehow everything has slipped again. Money coach, Martha Lawton asks expert guests about how we normal humans can understand our financial behaviour and use that knowledge to manage money in ways that actually work in our messy, complicated lives. episode 42: 42: Grand gestures and expensive gifts with Dr Jane Major

When a gift seems very high cost compared to the income or wealth of the giver or the receiver, it can cause feelings other than gratitude. Questions arise about motives and expectations. Can they afford it and what do they want in return? And can I afford that? Some people give for the pleasure of giving, but some give to be recognised, to hide feelings of inadequacy or to place the receiver in their debt.

What can we do to make gift giving a pleasurable experience all round? And how can we react when gift giving goes wrong?

With Dr Jane Major, clinical psychologist and relationship therapist from The Room Between therapy practice.
