Histories of the Unexpected

Histories of the Unexpected explores the past in ways that you never dreamt possible. Surely there’s nothing unexpected about the past? About History? Aha, well Histories of the Unexpected adopts a new approach to exploring our past. Gone is the traditional linear plotting of battles, monarchs and political movements. Histories of the Unexpected argues that everything has a history, even the most unexpected of subjects. Like SLIME. Or COURAGE. or APPLAUSE.... Presented by Dr Sam Willis and Professor James Daybell. SQUID!

In this latest episode, the Unexpected duo, Professor James Daybell and Dr Sam Willis are inspired yet again by the blockbuster Netflix drama series Squid Game and plumb the depths in search of the unexpected history of SQUID! Which is all about H.G. Wells, 'The Sea Raiders' and Ladram Bay in Devon - walk there if you dare! It's about Archie the Giant Squid at the Natural History Museum in London, zoological specimens, cataloguing and the archaeology of knowledge; it's about tales of sea monsters from the deep and fossilized ink that is more than 160 million years old, and of course fossil-hunter extraordinaire, Mary Anning. It's also all about the history of perfume, and odours from the past! Who knew!
