episode 14: MD5 – Seven not out for BVB in “Englische Woche”

Englische Woche may not have been too popular in the stands, but on the pitch, the play didn’t disappoint. Borussia Dortmund hit newcomers FC Nürnberg for 7 at the Westfalenstadion with no response. It pushes them up to second in the table after Werder Bremen beat Hertha Berlin 3-1 to continue their unbeaten start to the season. Werder and BVB sit two points behind Bayern, who dropped their first points of the season by drawing at home to Augsburg. Schalke’s fortunes do not look to be changing any time soon as they lose their 5th game out of 5 , this time against Freiburg, to stay rock bottom.

The fixtures were marked by fan protests at all of the Bundesliga grounds as well as those of their counterparts in the 2.Bundesliga. As Germany bid to host the 2024 European Championships (which they eventually won), German supporters clubs decided to hold 20 minutes of silence at the start of each game, which was certainly noticeable in stadiums that are usually buoyant. The bid was not the only thing that was under fire from the fans, with Englische Woche itself also severely criticised.

As ever, we discuss all of the matchday’s action, although we only lightly touch upon the protests and the bid as we will cover this in more detail in next week’s show.

As always, a very special thanks to our friends ‘Phre The Eon’ for the new theme music. Anyone interested can find them on Facebook.
