Enrique de la Madrid, Mexico’s Minister of Tourism, discusses the rhetoric used in the presidential campaign, as it relates to Mexico, and how this portrayal of Mexico differs from his view of the nation he represents on a national stage.
He spoke of the benefits of the U.S.-Mexico trade agreement, and dispelled the belief that companies are locating to Mexico solely for cheaper labor, a claim which has often been cited by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump as the reason many American jobs have been lost to Mexico.
"They're not moving production into Mexico because labor is cheaper, " de la Madrid said. "Many other costs are cheaper in Mexico...it's some other issues, for example transportation; it is logistics; it sometimes could be bureaucratic things. They do not only go to Mexico for cheaper labor, but because Mexico has 45 free-trade agreements with other countries around the world. So they are also moving into Mexico to reach other markets."
