The Latest on Clinton: Tuition, Trump and FBI Testimony
Amy Chozick, national political reporter at The New York Times who covers Hillary Clinton and a frequent contributor to The New York Times Magazine, discusses the most recent developments in Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
Yesterday she spoke in Atlantic City to take on Trump and Christie in their own backyard.
Clinton also unveiled her plan to eliminate college tuition at in-state public colleges and universities.
Chozick discussed FBI director James Comey's upcoming testimony to the U.S. House Oversight Committee about the investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server for official communications while Secretary of State.
Chozick said Hillary's approach to her campaign, during a week where Comey criticized her for being “extremely careless" in using a private email server for official communications as Secretary of State, was to both ramp up her attacks on Donald Trump and put forward the types of proposals that resonate with voters.
"They would prefer to hear 'what are you going to do make my kid's college more affordable; what are you going to do so that I can take care of my elderly relatives; they want to hear solutions for the problems in their lives," Chozick said of voters. "That is unfortunately not the political landscape in which we live. There was a period in this race when Donald Trump was throwing everything that he had at Hillary Clinton — the scandals of the 90s; allegations against her husband — and she was trying to maintain 'well here's what I'm going to try to do to help the middle class.' And frankly it wasn't working. She can't leave that job to surrogates like President Obama, who came out for her this week, or Elizabeth Warren, who have both been very effective in attacking Trump. I think she kind of wishes she could outsource it, but at the end of the day, can't."
