episode 15: Relationship with Self

As a mother, wife, daughter, it always fell to me to be of service to others.  I didn't appreciate myself and I didn't have a relationship with myself.  It really hit home when I was on an airplane with my young children and the attendants were giving us instructions to put on my own mask before helping anyone else.  At first, it made me angry.  Of course, my children would get the air masks first! 

Until I realized that if I don't have any oxygen for myself, I couldn't help anyone else.  You can't pour from an empty cup.  That's why self care is so important.  It is the act of doing what you can to keep yourself healthy so that you're able to take care of others.  To quote RuPaul: "Who is going to love you if you don't love yourself?"

Part of taking care of yourself is dealing with suppressed emotions such as anger, frustration, and stress.  Holding these emotions inside over-taxes your liver, which in turn makes you sick.  Weight gain and loss can also be a direct result of suppressed emotions.  Suppressed stress and anger certainly contributed to my possible heart attack.

This is key: You need to know who you are, what you stand for, and truly accept and have a relationship with yourself in order to gain real wealth in your life.

You cannot have a relationship with anyone else until you have a relationship with yourself.  Your homework for this episode is this:  Make a list of all your values.  What do you hold near and dear to your heart?  What is non-negotiable?  What makes you you?  Make a list of your beliefs.  Then make a list of what you're going to do about it for yourself.
