Training and racing an Ironman is a challenge for even the fittest athletes. But what about doing these races blind? In this episode, endurance lady Diane Bergeron talks to us about losing her sight, discovering the sport of triathlon, and her training for Ironman Mont Tremblant 2017.
Diane Bergeron is Executive Director, Strategic Relations and Engagement for CNIB. She is the mother of two adult children and is a strong advocate for the rights of people with sight loss in Canada. Diane started her participation in sports later in life at the age of 47. Since then she has made up for lost time completing several events, including three half ironman events and in 2015 she took on her first full Ironman. Although Diane did not complete the full event, she hasn’t given up and is working towards her second attempt in 2017. Diane has also competed internationally in dragon boat racing. Of the three events in triathlon, her favorite is swimming.

The Bergeron Method by Diane Bergeron: “Don’t just set one goal for yourself... set three for each activity. The middle goal should be your SMART goal [Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely] - something you think is attainable and realistic. Then raise the bar a bit and set your stretch goal to go faster, longer, or further than you really think you can and make that your ultimate goal. Finally, set your third goal as one that allows for you to still feel successful even if things go terribly wrong.”
