Jesus was very clear that everything hinged this. He was referring to a very different type of love than is prevalent in todays world. The love Jesus referred to is the "God type " of love; true agape love. This is a completely selfless love that is sacrificial in nature. It is impossible to love with agape outside of a relationship with God. Even for believers, agape love doesn't just happen. We have to work at it. The first fruit of the Spirit is love. This means that if we are to fulfill the greatest commandment, we must have a relationship with the Lord. From there, He uses the trials of our lives to refine us. There is potential in every person, for every marriage, and in every situation. Nothing is beyond God's control. We are to love our neighbor, that is, whoever is near us and in need, like we would ourselves. Love On Trial challenges us to look inward and find out how we can better fulfill the greatest commandment. By doing so, we open the door for God to work in our situation.
