Making true crime content can be a tough line to walk. When you’re dealing with tantalizingly grim yet harrowingly true stories, it can be difficult to convey those tales in a way that is both tactful and entertaining at the same time. Luckily, Mike from That Chapter has mastered that, and his gifted approach to storytelling has helped him reach an audience of millions for over half a decade now.

With such a vast knowledge of cases under his belt, Mike knows plenty of stories of people who murder and get caught. We flip that on its head, though, and ask him how he’d get away with it. Matt also tells us the great lengths he would go to to protect his prized cat.

A lot of these murder cases aren’t exactly black and white, and sometimes there’s a moral gray area that can get a little confusing. We ask Mike about that gray area, and whether or not he’s ever felt sympathy for the perpetrators. We talk about the old “nurture vs. nature” debate, and get into all the dumb things people have done to get caught.

Over the years, it’s been increasingly difficult to get sensitive content monetized on YouTube, and true crime has been no exception to that rule. Mike tells us how he’s been able to keep himself afloat through all those tribulations, and what methods work to keep his content on the map.

We also get an exclusive look at the process of making a That Chapter video, and how Mike has created such a captivating energy for his content. He tells us about the importance of fan interaction when it comes to selecting a good story, and how his casual approach to storytelling has truly set him apart from the rest.

Kevin also gets to add another case to his collection that proves his theory that YouTubers always have some sort of musical background. Mike tells us some stories from his glory days of playing in bands, his ironic aversion to traditional Irish music, and his contrarian love for U2.

We finish things off with some questions from our patrons who want to know about any stand out cases that Mike has come across, the negative side effects of true crime, and so much more.

Thanks to everyone who joined the live show this week, and a special shout out to our patrons. You really do make this show happen. We’ll see you all next week for a special Matt and Kevin SOLO EPISODE.
