On January 3, 1943 the 360th Bomb Squadron of the US Air Force was conducting a daylight bombing raid over St. Nazaire in France, attempting to take out German submarine yards. Alan Magee was a ball turret gunner in one the B-17 bombers joining the dangerous raid. The bomber took fire from German fighters which shot off parts of the right wing, sending the plane in to a deadly spin. Magee had no choice but to jump out of the plane… without a parachute...
