Australia's appointment to the United Nations Human Rights Council for a three-year term is drawing mixed reactions. 15 countries have been elected to the 47 member Geneva-based council, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Chinese president Xi Jinping is about to be accorded a rare honour at the five-yearly National Congress of the Communist Party in Beijing. The party is expected to enshrine what it calls "Xi Jinping thought" into its constitution by the end of the congress this week (24-10-17). It will cement his place in history. Holden has produced its last car in Australia with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull acknowledging it as a sad day for the country as unions warn many of those losing their jobs will struggle to find new work. The closure of the car manufacturer's facilities also draws the curtain on Australia's vehicle manufacturing industry after similar shutdowns by Ford last year and Toyota earlier this month. Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte has declared victory over IS-linked militants in the embattled city of Marawi. Khamleck Thongvilu. The city has been embroiled in nearly five months of fierce fighting.

Leukaemia and lymphoma patients in Australia could soon have access to a treatment that uses genetically modified cells to fight cancer.  Researchers at Sydney's Westmead Hospital will conduct an Australian-first trial of the treatment, that could mark a new area of cancer therapy. Khamleck Thongvilu/ຄຳ​ເຫຼັກ ທອງວິ​ລຸຍ
