World of Horror with Mom & Mac

Mother and son team Mom and Mac discuss, analyze, dissect and explore international horror movies. Conversations are casual but spoiler-heavy. We take turns choosing a genre or subgenre of horror and pairing an international film with an American one. Past episodes have included: Funny Games, One Missed Call, Let the Right One In/Let Me In. Genres we have covered are Animal Attack (BOAR from Australia and TREMORS); Creepy Kids (GOODNIGHT, MOMMY from Austria and ORPHAN); Battle Royale-type films (BATTLE ROYALE from Japan and THE BELKO EXPERIMENT); Haunted Houses (THE HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME from Venezuela and BEETLEJUICE). Special episodes feature foundational international horror films or guests who come on to highlight a film that "Means the World of Horror" to them. https://linktr.ee/WorldofHorror

WoHos!

For the last main show of 2023, we look at two movies about vampires: SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE from the US and RIGOR MORTIS from Hong Kong.

Mom & Mac Chat: Names that drive up the wall, kids today, being too attached to our phone. Also, Mom is (Internet) autistic.

Mac liked SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE a whole lot because of the performances. Mom liked RIGOR MORTIS a lot because of the cool fight scenes and some of the folklore, confusing as it was...

episode 122: STARSHIP TROOPERS & SLASH/BACK: Episode 122: Aliens!

This week we looked at the cult classic, STARSHIP TROOPERS, which is a flick Mom can't believe she never saw. We both loved this one a ton.
We also looked at the low-budget gem, SLASH/BACK, from Canada, which talks about the friendship girls share as well as some aliens who land in a small Nunavut town. Mom went gaga for the scenery in this one.

There is lots of waffle up top in this one. If you want to jump to the movie talk, that starts at 26:18...

episode 120: POLTERGEIST (1982) & THE OTHERS: Mom's Picks: Ghosts: They're Here!

WoHos!

This week we looked at two movies related to Ghosts: POLTERGEIST (1982) & THE OTHERS.
POLTERGEIST deals with the sins of capitalism and consumerism in the guise of some disruptove ghosties. Mac enjoyed this more than I did. I felt super sad at the depiction of the teenage daughter as an object of sexual attention and nothing much else.
Strong performances by JoBeth Williams, Beatrice Straight, Zelda Rubenstein, and Craig T...

WoHos!

Mac's picks this week involve animated horror. We reviewed WENDELL & WILD from the US and UNICORN WARS from Spain & France.

Both deal with deep emotional issues and neither are appropriate for young children. Mac wonders if UNICORN WARS is appropriate for some adults!

Next time we are looking at movies involving haunted houses. We will be looking at THE OTHERS from Spain & POLTERGEIST 1982 from the US...

Oh, what a fun film this is! This week Stefan MacDonald of Terminal Burrower Films and Drag Mitch to Hell joins me to discuss this mutual fave.
