Mixed Emotions by Brian Norwood

DJ Brian Norwood was born during the first seedlings of dance music as we know it today were sprouting. In the 1970s, the Tea Dance at Fire Island's Blue Whale was settling in as ritual and David Mancuso's infamous "The Loft" parties in NYC were just getting started. Being born in the music-rich environment of Nashville would be a harbinger of things to come. And being born in that era would greatly impact his career. In the 90's, Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, would open its arms to Brian. This move to a more urban environment and being within the twinkle of NYC skyscrapers, is an important transition not only in geography, but of musical awakening. After attending a seminal Saint-At-Large Party with all its intendant revelry, he felt an overwhelming drive to cultivate music and learn to mix. Vinyl was still the preferred medium for DJ's, which gives Brian the unique perspective of being among the younger DJ's still spinning today who teethed on vinyl. In the 90s Brian began to play live shows. His ability to feel the energy of a room and to zero in on what crowds want to hear quickly gained him major name recognition that spread from Philadelphia to the entire nation...

episode 94: Epic Maui Journey 2023 #1

Welcome to the start of one of the happiest days I have each and every year.  The beginnings of my live gigs are always a big source of pride and joy for me.  You've heard me mention numerous times before my belief that musical performances should form an unseen arc with a clear beginning that invites the listener in -- comforting and intriguing them all at once.  I conceive all my musical performances with clearly defined "sections" all the while carefully blurring the transitions from genre to genre so carefully that the shifts in energy are subtle and happen subconsciously.  All that being said...here is the beginning of one of the most special days I'll ever be part of.  Once you listen to this I hope you'll be amazed that some of these songs would have any part of a "dance" party.  I go out of my way to welcome my attendees with chill and loving vibes.  The songs that start this mix aren't necessarily ones you would dance to but they ARE songs that will stir your soul, shake your hips and wrap you in warmth and happiness.  I open the day with George Ezra "Shotgun"; a quirky indie guitar piece of music that just brings a smile to the face.  A perfect song to open the day.  From there I segued into Craig Strickland "Starlit Afternoon".  Whoa.  This song gives me chill bumps.  Every. Single. Time.  What a perfect song for the day.  If there was every such a thing as a starlit afternoon...this is it.  From there I go into Zac Abel "Be Kind".  LISTEN TO THE WORDS OF THIS SONG!!! Very important message going on here.  Please, seriously, listen to the words.  We need more of this in our world right now.  Zac Abel is our ally and we need as much of him as we can get.  I then mix into Keith Urban "Street Called Main".  Who says I can't play "country" music in my sets (I am from Nashville after all!).  We'll call it country-pop -- and I love it.  This is where I try to carve out a true and genuine style and think outside the box a bit.  From there I want you to zero in on track #9 "Home" by Vicetone.  This song's message is powerful.  The energy is rising and serious and heartfelt all at once.  I always look for messages in my songs and I always want to share them with you.  My gifts to you are sometimes subtle.  Listen.  It's at this point that I begin to bring the energy up ever so subtly.  My standouts from here on are the astounding Nina Simone remake of "Birds Flying High" by Möwe, "Cold Heart" by Elton John and the breathtaking Purple Disco Machine remix of "Hold Me Closer" by Elton John and Brittany Spears to close out the set. As always every sound and word you'll hear here (ha!)originated from my heart.  I made an oath with myself many years ago that that would be the case.  And it is my joy and pleasure to share this with you.  I hope you'll feel it, love it, share it.  From my heart...to your ears...ENJOY. #/Artist/Title/Track01.  George Ezra/Shotgun02.  Craig Stickland/Starlit Afternoon03.  Zak Abel/Be Kind04.  Keith Urban/Street Called Main05.  Lukas Graham/Fever/Kygo Original 06.  Kygo/Thrill Of The Chase/Original Mix07.  Stevie Appleton/What A Life/Extended Mix08.  R3HAB,VIZE/One Last Time/Extended Mix09.  Vicetone/Home/Original Mix10.  Elton John/Cold Heart/Javier Penna Extended11.  Benjamin Ingrosso/Black & Blue/Extended Mix12.  Mowe/Birds Flying High/Original Mix13.  Elton John, Britney Spears/Hold Me Closer/PDM Extended14.  Me & My Toothbrush/Unbreakable/Extended MixFOR WORLDWIDE DJ BOOKING INFORMATION:Email:  IamBrianNorwood@gmail.comPhone:  615-418-8900Facebook:  Brian NorwoodInstagram:  DJ Brian Norwood
