Devaluing the Past: In Consumerism.

“Consumerism can be defined  as an over-attachment to material goods and possessions such that one’s meaning of worth is determined by them. … It is not just the attachment to material things, it is also the need for constant acquisition of the same. Life is enriched not simply by possessing goods but by the process of acquiring them.”

Should the church be calling out the selfish deceitfulness of consumerism?

“Ads that preach; What you have now is not enough for your happiness, you nee something else, something new, in order to find true fulfillment.’

Satan appeals to our selfish desires. We see this in the Garden of Eden, when Eve saw that the fruit was good food and desired the wisdom the serpent told her it would give her.

How many viewers are wearing clothes they bought ten years ago? How many are using computers or cell phones that are 5 year old? Or driving cars that are more than 15 years old?

In Christ, no longer do you have your outlook geared to things that you can weigh and see and feel and touch and count and take to the bank.

You want to know how rich you really are? Add up everything that you have that money cannot buy and that death cannot take away.

In today’s topsy-turvey world, youth has status.

Churches make the point that certain young people have left: we need to do something.

Some churches act as if they need to respond to the needs of the consumer.

The consumer is king mentality renders all established and time-tested practices unstable and utterly negotiable.

Devaluing the Past: In The Disappearance of “Human Nature”.

The idea of a human nature that connects people in one time and place to another is today often neglected or ignored.

We are created in the image of God with three parts of our human nature—spirit, soul, and body.

God formed us, sin deformed us.
