Today we discuss Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus, quite possibly the first work of science fiction. Beginning with its importance to science fiction, we work through many of the themes that have come up again and again in our readings of more modern science fiction novels, and discuss how and why these are so important. What is it that makes Frankenstein’s creation so terrifying, and is it possible to portray that today?
