Claudio Santoro is one of the great 20th century Brazilian composers. As a young composer he followed Arnold Schoenberg’s school of atonal music. However, in the 1940’s he evolved toward a nationalistic manner of using the resources of classical and 20th century music, very Brazilian and very beautiful. His 5th symphony was composers in 1955 and deserves a place among the most prominent symphony of the past century.
