The Certainty of Christ's Coming
Second Peter Chapter 3 addresses the coming of Jesus Christ and emphasizes the importance of being prepared. Peter begins by acknowledging that he is writing a second letter to the brethren, reminding them of the teachings of the prophets and apostles.
Peter first addresses the skepticism and doubts that some may have concerning the coming of Christ. He points out that in the last days, people will mock the idea, living in accordance with their own desires and denying the existence of God. Peter warns that these scoffers willfully ignore the historical evidence of God's judgment in the past, such as the flood during Noah's time.
Peter then explains that the coming of Christ has been delayed for the sake of giving people ample time to repent and turn to God. He explains that with God, a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like a day, meaning that God's sense of time is different from ours. Therefore, God's apparent delay should not be mistaken as His absence or indifference but rather as an opportunity for salvation.
Peter encourages the believers not to lose hope but to remain steadfast in their faith, living lives of holiness and godliness. He assures them that the day of the Lord will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night, and that the heavens and the earth will pass away with a great noise, to be replaced with a new heaven and a new earth.
Peter reminds them that, in light of this impending judgment, they should strive to be found blameless and at peace with God. He warns against false teachers who distort the teachings of the apostles, leading people astray. He advises that they to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, and to be on guard against deception.
In conclusion, 2 Peter Chapter 3 emphasizes the certainty of Christ's coming, the need for repentance and holiness, and the importance of remaining vigilant against false teachings. Peter encourages believers to live in anticipation of the day of the Lord, knowing that God's timing is perfect and that His judgment will come to pass.
