Debate: Are the Trump indictments legitimate?
We’re excited to bring you the latest installment in our debate series this week, now with journalist Michael Tracey on the topic of the Trump indictments. The former president (and current presidential candidate) faces accusations related to election interference, mishandling of classified documents, and falsifying business records. At the same time, a recent Emerson poll has Trump barely above Biden in Arizona, and a Morning Consult poll puts Biden ahead by a single point in a general-election matchup. In other words, the indictments haven’t sunk Trump’s campaign; for now, his hold remains strong on the Republican voting base, and he’ll remain a force for the Biden reelection campaign to contend with.
Michael is joining us to take on the question of the legitimacy of the indictments against Trump, which he’s critiqued lately. Through our debate, we want to get at an understanding of why so few Trump voters have been turned away by the criminal charges the former president now faces, as well as how further developments in Trump’s cases could change this situation.
