Conservative Sohrab Ahmari has written a fascinating new book called Tyranny, Inc., analyzing the manifestations of “private tyranny” — the empowering of the corporate world to exert influence on American politics and public life — in our political sphere. Following decades of waxing corporate control over government and waning public influence, the idea that corporations are people — and that they, unlike everyday Americans, should be the beneficiaries of public resources — has become fully mainstream in our political discourse. But it’s essential to take a step back and call this phenomenon what it is: tyranny.
Ahmari’s book attempts to convince his fellow conservatives that they should take corporate tyranny seriously. Is this a hopeless project? Can genuine economic populism exist in the Republican Party? We will debate these questions and more!
