דובר לעיל אודות גודל מעלת הצבור בעשי"ת. ולכאו' מהי מעלת הצבור בנוגע מצות התשובה (עיקר ענין עשי"ת) – הרי עבודת התשובה היא מצוה שבין אדם למקום, ועבור עבודת התשובה צריך האדם לעשות "חשבון צדק" אמיתי, וכדי שזה יהי' באופן המתאים צריך הוא להתבונן בגדלות ה' מצווה המצוות וכו', שלזה דרוש להיות ביחידות ללא ענינים המבלבלים וכו'?! וי"ל, ובהקדם: רואים בפועל "מעשה רב" שכאשר מגיע הזמן ש"חייבים לעשות תשובה" (יוהכ"פ) מתאספים כל בנ"י בביהכנ"ס (גם אלו שלא באים כל השנה), בצבור, דוקא. והביאור: מכיון שה"אדם קרוב אצל עצמו", לכן, כדי להבטיח שה"חשבון" שהוא עושה יהי' "חשבון צדק", צריך שעבודת התשובה תהי' ביחד עם הזולת שיעורר אותו על הדברים שה"אהבת עצמו" מכסה עליהם. ולזה זקוקים גם למעלת הצבור, שכוללת כל העשרה סוגים שבבנ"י, ובמילא יוכל כל אחד מהם לעורר אותו על הענינים שיש לו בו חוש וכשרון מיוחד. נפילת רוח בעת עבודת התשובה אי"ז אלא מתחבולות היצר לבלבלו מעבודת התשובה, ויש להזהר מזה. וידוע הפתגם "כשם שצריכים לידע את החסרונות כמו"כ צריכים לידע מעלת עצמו" – המעלות של יהודי הם של "עצמו", אבל החסרונות אינם של "עצמו" אלא נדבקו בו מבחוץ, ורק שעליו לתקנם וכו'.

We spoke earlier about the greatness of being with the congregation during the Ten Days of Teshuvah. But seemingly, teshuvah is a mitzvah between man and Hashem, that requires an “honest accounting,” which seemingly is best done by being alone and contemplating Hashem’s greatness etc.; what then is the advantage of doing it together with the congregation? To explain: we see that the reality is that when Yom Kippur, the time for teshuvah arrives, Jews rush to shul (even those who don’t come the rest of the year) specifically to be with the congregation. The reason is that since “a person is his own relative,” and there’s no guarantee he’ll be to objectively make an “honest accounting,” he has to go about his teshuvah in the presence of someone else, who can point out those areas where his “self-love” prevents him from seeing that fixing is needed. And this specifically requires the congregation, which includes all ten categories of Jews, so that everyone can show the person those areas in which they are passionate about etc., in which he needs fixing. Feeling down when doing teshuvah is a trick of the evil inclination, designed to distract prevent a person from doing teshuvah; we must be careful not to fall for it. And we know the adage of our Rebbe’im, “Just like one must be aware of his faults – so must he be aware of his own quality” – a Jew’s qualities are “his own,” but his faults are not “his own;” rather, they come from outside him, and get stuck to him due to his engagement in the physicality of the world etc.
