ענינו המיוחד של יוהכ"פ הוא ענין התשובה. והנה כתיב "וחטאתי נגדי תמיד", וצ"ל: הרי לאחר שעשה תשובה ונתכפר לו, ונק' "ידיד" של הקב"ה, למה עליו לזכור "תמיד" שחטא פעם?! אלא דכמו שחיות האדם הוא ענין תמידי ולא שייך בזה הפסק, עד"ז עניני תומ"צ, חיים האמיתי של יהודי, צ"ל באופן תמידי. ובפרט ענין התשובה שמושרשת במדריגה שלמע' משינויים ("אני ה' לא שניתי"), הרי כשזה נמשך למטה ה"ז באופן של תמידיות, שגם לאחרי הכפרה ה"ה בתנועה של תשובה. וזהו גם תוכן הציווי "כל ימיו בתשובה": דלכאו' למה צ"ל "בתשובה" ביום שבטוח שלא חטא?! אלא שכל זה הוא בנוגע לתשובה תתאה הקשורה עם זמן ומקום, ואם כבר הי' הענין דוידוי דברים והבאת קרבן ונתכפר לו וכו', אין מקום לזה עוה"פ למחרתו, אבל בנוגע לתשובה עילאה להיות רצוי לפני הקב"ה כקודם החטא ועוד יותר וכו' – ה"ז צ"ל באופן של "כל ימיו בתושבה" – באופן תמידי! וזהו גם הענין ד"עתיד לאתבא צדיקיא בתיובתא". ועד"ז בנוגע התשובה של יוהכ"פ: דאע"פ שענין הוידויים בדיבור ה"ז ביוהכ"פ דוקא, אבל באמת – אדרבה, דוקא התשובה של יוהכ"פ, "לפני ה' תטהרו", יש להמשיך על כל השנה!

Yom Kippur is the day of teshuvah. It is written, “my sin is always before me”; the question is, once was has done teshuvah and has attained atonement, he is called a “friend” of Hashem; why then must he “always” remember that he once sinned?! The answer is that just as life must be constant, and it cannot be interrupted, so, too, Torah and mitzvos – the true life of a Jew – must be constant without interruption. And this is especially true of the teshuvah rooted in a level that transcends change (“I, Hashem, have not changed”): when it comes down in this world it is constant, so that even after atonement, one still is in a state of teshuvah. And this is the meaning of “spending all his days in teshuvah”: Seemingly, what need is there for teshuvah on a day that one is certain he didn’t sin?! The answer is that while that may be the case regarding lower-level teshuvah, which involves time and space, and where it is the case that once one has verbally confessed and brought a sacrifice etc. and attained atonement etc., so there is no reason to do that again the next day – however, when it comes to higher-level teshuvah, to become desirable before Hashem like before the sin, and even more so etc. – that requires spending “all his days in teshuvah” – “always.” And this is also the idea that in the future Hashem will bring tzaddikim to do teshuvah. Similarly regarding the teshuvah of Yom Kippur: even though the verbal confessions etc. take place specifically on Yom Kippur, the truth is, to the contrary, it is specifically the teshuvah of Yom Kippur, “you shall be purified before Hashem,” that must continue the whole year!
