מלשון חז"ל "מי שלא ראה שמחת בית השואבה לא ראה שמחה מימיו" מובן, שכדי לראות איזו שמחה שתהי' ה"ז דוקא ע"י ראיית שמחת ביה"ש. ועפי"ז צ"ל, הרי שמחת ביה"ש התחילה בביהמ"ק בלילה השני' (דאינה דוחה שבת ויו"ט), ואיך נק' כל חג הסוכות, גם לילה ויום הראשון, "זמן שמחתנו"?! ועכצ"ל שהשמחה דשמחת ביה"ש פועלת למפרע. וזהו גם מה שחגה"ס נק' "חג האסיף" (דזה שבגשמיות זהו הזמן של "באספך את תבואתך", ה"ז מפני דזהו הזמן לזה ברוחניות): חגה"ס בא בהמשך לכפרה דיוהכ"פ, שבאה ע"י עבודת התשובה בשלימות שע"י מתהפכים גם הזדונות שבעבר לזכיות, והיינו, שמאסף את כל הענינים שלו, גם הזדונות, לרשות יהודי – זכיות. ולכן גם, דוקא השמחה שבאה בהמשך לזה היא בשלימות עד שהיא פועלת גם על העבר, שגם אותם הענינים שבעבר לא היו משמחים ה"ה מתהפכים לענינים המשמחים בשמחה נגלית כפשוטה.

Our Sages tell us that “One who did not see the Simchas Beis Hasho’eiva never saw celebration in his life.” Thus, we can understand that it is only possible to see celebration – whatever celebration it may be – after one has seen Simchas Beis Hasho’eiva. The question is: Simchas Beis Hasho’eiva in the Beis Hamikdash began on the second night (because it doesn’t override Shabbos or Yom Tov); how then can the entire Sukkos, including the first night, be called “the time of our rejoicing?” We must therefore say that the joy of Simchas Beis Hasho’eiva on the second night is great that it has an effect the past, transforming retroactively to true joy. And this also is why Sukkos is also called “the festival of the ingathering:” The reason it is the time for gathering physical produce into the house is because it is a time of spiritual ingathering. Sukkos comes after the complete teshuvah of Yom Kippur, which retroactively transforms even the intentional sins of the past into merits. In this sense, one gathers every aspect of his life, even the intentional sins, into his Jewish domain – merits. And just as complete teshuvah has a retroactive effect, so does the complete joy elicited by such teshuvah retroactively transform the first night of Sukkos into true joy.
