הקשר בין מצוות החג ל""צבאות ה'". סוכה: נהוג בצבא להקים אוהלים וכו' בשביל החיילים שבשדה הקרב. כך גם הושיב ה' את בנ"י – צבאות ה' – "בסוכות" בצאתם ממצרים, ולזכור זאת – נצטוינו "בסוכות תשבו", ועושים זאת מתוך שמחה וחיות וכו'. נטילת לולב: נהוג בעולם שצבא המנצח במלחמה יוצא ומפגין את כחו ברחובות עיר ע"י שמראה לעין כל את סוגי הנשק שבידו. כך גם בנוגע לבנ"י כתוב במדרש, שאחרי עבודת התשובה של עשי"ת ויוהכ"פ "ישראל יוצאין . . ולולביהן ואתרוגיהן בידן [ה"כלי נשק" של בנ"י] אנו יודעים דישראל אינון ניצוחייא"! ובאמת – גם היצה"ר עצמו שמח מזה שלא נכנעים אליו, כי שליחותו האמיתית אינה להכשיל ח"ו אלא לנסות. זמן שמחתינו: השמחה בקיום המצוות [שמחה של תורה ושל מצוה – שיש לו משמעת צבאית ונזהר שהשמחה לא תהפך ל"הוללות" ח"ו] מראה עוד יותר עד כמה הוא חכם וחזק ואינו מתפעל מתחבולות היצר עד שמצליח לבטלו לגמרי.

The connection between Sukkos and Tzivos Hashem: 1) Sukkah: Armies set up tents for their soldiers; similarly, when Hashem took the Jewish people (Hashem’s army) out of Egypt, He had them dwell in “booths” – and He commanded us to likewise dwell in the sukkah on Sukkos, and to do so joyously etc. (2) Lulav: When an army is victorious in battle, the soldiers go out to display their weapons etc.; similarly, the Midrash says that after the service of the Ten Days of Teshuvah and Yom Kippur, when “the Jewish people go out…with their lulavs and esrogs in their hands (their ‘weapons’) we know that we have been victorious.” And in truth, even the yetzer hara itself is happy over the fact that a Jew doesn’t listen to it, because its true mission isn’t to cause a Jew to stumble, chas v’shalom, but to test a Jew. (3) The time of our rejoicing: The joy (the joy of Torah and mitzvos – which requires military discipline to ensure it doesn’t turn into frivolity chas v’shalom) further shows how much a Jew is wise and strong, and isn’t affected by the schemes of the yetzer hara, to the point that he completely nullifies it.
