Slovenian Films in Frankfurt: Ženja Leiler Kos and Igor Prassel (Slovenian Cinematheque) in conversation

The Guest of Honor of the Frankfurt Book Fair Slovenia presents itself in October 2023 with 14 feature films and 18 short films in the cinema of the DFF. Slovenia is considered a nation of poetry and this is also reflected in the film program. In doing so, the retrospective deliberately departs from the concept of literary adaptation, which otherwise served as the basis for Slovenian film for many years, and focuses on film as an autonomous art form. The retrospective was opened by two silent film concerts on October 3 and 4, and will continue on October 13.

In the podcast, director Ženja Leiler Kos and film curator Igor Prassel of the Slovenian Cinematheque talk about their thoughts that preceded the retrospective, offering interesting insights into Slovenia's film history, the close connections between literature and film in the Slovenian cultural landscape, and the development of their comparatively young institution.

The Slovenian Cinematheque in Ljubljana holds the only remaining original of Ernst Lubitsch's earliest surviving feature film ALS ICH TOT WAR (1916), Franz Hofer's earliest surviving film DES ALTERS ERSTE SPUREN, and the short film LE JONGLEUR (Pathé, 1913), of which it owns the world's only color print. In addition to Lubitsch's film, the retrospective also features works from the 1960s - a time when the so-called "Black Wave" emerged in Yugoslav feature film - and contemporary works.
