"In the midst of heartbreak, hopelessness, fury, and sadness, Jesus is still present; Jesus is especially present when people die violent and unfair deaths. Which means that when we hear the stories of Baghdad, Baton Rouge, Falcon Heights, and Dallas, we ought to think of Jesus: Jesus, who died a violent and unfair death. Jesus, who was killed by religious extremists. Jesus, who was attacked by the temple police. Jesus, who was assassinated by some of the people he’d come to serve and rescue. Jesus, whose life was all tangled up in the pain of injustice. Jesus, whose feet are firmly planted on the side of the oppressed."
