Zootopia is a delightful animated movie about a society of animals that has managed to all get along harmoniously. Central to this concept is that predators no longer eat prey, but the history, and the fears of such a time still remain. We follow a rabbit by the name of ‘Judy Hopps’ making her way into a profession not normally suited for one of Judy's stature, the Police. What commences is detective story driven by a focus on stereotypes and prejudice, and discovering how trust and understanding can overcome panic and paranoia.
This seems to be the main message of Zootopia, and its take on walking, talking animals is incredibly refreshing and modern, but a deeper, more cynical message resides within. So do children’s movies need to be layered with meanings? Do most seem to be mortality tales about doing some good in the world? Do children just want movies that are entertaining and funny? How much do these movies need to cater to parents and does this inform choice?
