  • The change in auto-download behaviour for Apple Podcasts is showing up in Libsyn's data for October: Apple's share of downloads dropped 3.6% from August. Buzzsprout earlier reported a drop of 4.8% for Apple. (We're comparing August to October here, since iOS 17 rolled out in mid September.)

    • Triton Digital released the Canadian Podcast Ranker for October. In comparison to August, downloads were down 2.5%. US figures were down 8.4% across the same timeline.
    • If you're a podcast host, and able to calculate total figures for Apple Podcasts for August and October? We'd love to compare them to help the industry. editor@podnews.net
  • Almost half of podcasters in Ukraine have a permanent team working on their podcast, and the number of podcasts being released in Ukraine is increasing, according to a full study from MEGOGO, an OTT platform.
  • 27% of desktop computers run ad-blocking software, says new data from Eyeo. Ad-blocking isn't possible with these tools on podcasts, but don't celebrate quite yet: ad-blocking tools like Pi-Hole or Control D can instead cause entire podcasts not to be downloadable.

  • How does fair use, otherwise known as fair dealing, actually work? We've been pointed to this rather good writeup from Channel 4, a TV company in the UK. Scroll down to the fair dealing section; it's UK-specific, but UK law is, in most cases, a little more picky. /thanks Matt!
